Reconciling diverging frequency effects in inflectional defectiveness
In his study of defective Spanish verbs, Albright (2003) found speakers’ form judgments to be positively correlate with lexeme frequency. For defective French verbs, however, speakers’ judgments are negatively correlated with lexeme frequency (Copot & Sims 2025). What is the source of these diverging observations? We test the role of methodological choices by using Copot & Sims’s experimental design to investigate Spanish verbal defectiveness. Th…
Morphologie implicative et conjugaison du français
Cet article retrace l’évolution de l’étude de la conjugaison française depuis l’approche thématique de Bonami & Boyé (2003) jusqu’aux approches implicatives contemporaines. Face aux difficultés structurelles de l’approche thématique, l’approche implicative adopte une perspective abstractive et probabiliste quantifiant les relations d’inter-prédictibilité entre formes fléchies. Deux études empiriques valident cette approche théorique : une analyse…
The influence of prescriptivism on French verbal defectiveness
Words that speakers and dictionaries deem to be morphologically defective (and thus unacceptable) are often found in corpora, suggesting a disconnect between judgements about such words and usage of them. This paper explores the hypothesis that social and contextual factors may help explain why defective words are often attested despite speakers’ intuitions that they should not be. We carry out a study on French, proposing that some verbs convent…
Baseless derivation
Standard accounts of derivational morphology assume that it is incremental: some words are formed on the basis of others, and each derivational family has a base from which all of the other words are derived. The importance of the base has been questioned by paradigmatic approaches to morphology, which posit that word systems are about multidirectional relationships between words and paradigm cells, in which no word has a privileged status. This …
