Predictors of subjective well-being in Taiwan
This study examines key factors associated with subjective well-being (SWB) and their distributional patterns, with particular attention to threshold effects. We conducted a cross-sectional machine learning analysis using data from 10,712 adults in Taiwan drawn from a large-scale survey conducted in 2024. SHAP analysis was applied to interpret model outputs. Five central predictors—family relationships, health, interpersonal relationships, life g…

On the one hand, state policies toward religions in these societies are deciphered and their implications for religious freedom and regional stability are evaluated. On the other hand, Chinese Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism, Daoism, Christianity, Islam and folk religions are respecti…

Associations of objective and subjective relative deprivation with health, happiness, and life satisfaction
Both objective and subjective relative deprivation were negatively associated with multiple dimensions of human flourishing. Policies aimed at addressing relative deprivation and reducing income inequality could contribute to higher levels of health, happiness, life satisfaction, social relationships, and economic stability
Sex differences in the association between sugar-sweetened beverages consumption and metabolic risks among the working-age population in Taiwan
Objective: Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) are linked to increased metabolic risk. However, the sex differences in the relationship between SSB intake and adverse health effects remain unclear. Therefore, the present study examined the association between SSB consumption and metabolic risks among working-age males and females from Taiwanese communities. Design: A community-based study utilised data from a comprehensive health screening project co…
Relative deprivation and human flourishing

Previous work has proposed the [Formula: see text] index as a measure of relative deprivation; however, the performance of this novel index still needs further testing in the working-age population. This study examined the association of three relative deprivation measures (the Yitzhaki Index, income rank and the [Formula: see text] inde…

Sacred, Secular, and Neosacred Governments in China and Taiwan
This chapter explores a puzzle in comparative religion–state relations: both the atheist Chinese communist government and the democratic Taiwanese government have substantially restored the traditional, pluralistic, religious state of Chinese dynasties. After 1949, the Chinese government and the Taiwanese government developed different types of religion–state relations. The Chinese Communist government initially aimed to eliminate all religions b…

Taiwan's Distorted Democracy in Comparative Perspective
Many scholars have lauded Taiwan's successful democratization as a "political miracle," parallel to its well-known "economic miracle" of the 1960s and 1970s. This paper argues, however, that the fulfillment of formal, procedural conditions of democracy conceals the development of a distorted democracy in Taiwan. An iron rectangle of the state, the ruling party, local factions, and conglomerates have gradually dominated Taiwan's political economy …
