  • Kant's Analysis of the Paralogism of Rational Psychology in Critique of Pure Reason Edition B

    Open Access•J D G Evans•ARTICLE•Kantian Review•1999

One third of the transcendental dialectic in Kant's Critique of Pure Reason is devoted to demolishing the pseudo-science of rational psychology. In this part of his work Kant attacks the idea that there is an ultimate subject of experience — the ‘I’ or Self — which can only be investigated and understood intellectually. The belief that such a study is possible is natural to human reason; but it is based on demonstrable error. Kant tries to exorci…

CHAPTER I. NATURE AS INNER PRINCIPLE OF CHANGE: The concept of "nature as inner principle of change" is fundamental to Aristotle's theory of the physical world; it is the object of the present thesis to substantiate this claim by tracing the effects of this idea in Aristotle's rejection of materialism, in his doctrine of "natural places", in his definition of change and process in general, and (via the latter) in his notion of agency in general a…

  • The Old Stoa on the Truth-Value of Oaths

    Open Access•J D G Evans•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Cambridge…•1974

Recent works on Stoic logic report that among complete λεκτά only a sub-class was regarded as capable of being true or false: by contrast with statements (ἀξιώματα), such other sentences as questions, orders and oaths do not bear a truth-value. But the situation is a good deal more complicated than that, at least in the case of oaths, which I propose to examine. In characterising all such utterances as ‘sentences’ I do not wish to beg questions w…
