Analyzing Trajectories of Acute Cigarette Reduction Post-Introduction of an E-Cigarette Using Ecological Momentary Assessment Data
Electronic cigarettes (ECs) may hold great potential for helping smokers transition off combustible cigarettes (CCs); however, little is known about the patterns that smokers follow when using an EC as a CC-substitute in order to ultimately reduce and quit smoking. Our primary aim in this study was to evaluate whether common patterns of CC use exist amongst individuals asked to substitute an EC for at least half of the CCs they would normally smo…

Thomas Kirchner studies Aachen as a municipality with adherents of three Christian denominations which created the prerequisites for a peaceful coexistence temporarily between 1555 and 1618.
PhenX: Vector measures for tobacco regulatory research
The PhenX (Phenotypes and eXposures) Toolkit provides researchers with recommended standard consensus measures for use in epidemiological, biomedical, clinical and translational studies. To expand the depth and breadth of measures in the PhenX Toolkit, the National Institutes of Health and U.S. Food and Drug Administration have launched a project to identify 'Core' and 'Specialty' collections of measures recommended for human subjects studies in …
Momentary measurements and chronic conditions
The impact of noise accumulates chronically, often beyond the awareness or control of residents. • GEMA methods are essential, because place-based exposures require context to interpret. • Time-and-place adaptive systems (TAPAS) prioritize participation over intervention
Beyond blunts: Reasons for cigarette and cigar use among African American young adult dual users
Cigarette and cigar smoking have several overlapping motivations, but key differences were also found, most notably for product characteristics. The FDA's regulation of cigars and cigarettes should focus on addressing key characteristics appealing to young adults to curb dual use
Acceptability of ecological momentary assessment among young men who have sex with men
The study evaluated the acceptability of text message- and voice-based ecological momentary assessment (EMA) methods among a sample (n=74) of young men who have sex with men (MSM). We assessed the acceptability of text message- and voice-based EMA methods. Almost all participants (96%) reported that they would be willing to accept texts on their smartphone to answer questions about their current mood, surroundings, or feelings. A large majority (…
Tobacco outlet density and converted versus native non-daily cigarette use in a national US sample
This paper provides initial evidence that the point-of-sale cigarette environment may be differentially associated with the maintenance of CNDS versus NNDS patterns. Future research should investigate how tobacco control efforts can be optimised to both promote cessation and curb the rising tide of non-daily smoking in the USA
Kirch…
Cigarette price variation around high schools: Evidence from Washington DC
Electronic cigarette advertising at the point-of-sale: A gap in tobacco control research
Use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) has increased significantly in the past 2 years1 ,2 and sales are estimated to reach $10 billion by 2017.3 All of the major tobacco companies have recently introduced their own e-cigarette and e-cigar brands into the tobacco marketplace or have plans to do so in the near future.4–9 News reports suggest that tobacco and e-cigarette companies have begun to significantly expand e-cigarette product distribu…
Tobacco retail outlet advertising practices and proximity to schools, parks and public housing affect Synar underage sales violations in Washington, DC
Findings demonstrate that while illicit tobacco sales to minors are occurring at acceptably low rates by Synar standards, illicit sales vary considerably by retail store type, advertising approach and proximity to high schools, parks and African-American residential areas. Future work may help inform regulatory efforts to reduce youth access at the neighbourhood, city, state and national levels

Marketing Little Cigars and Cigarillos: Advertising, Price, and Associations With Neighborhood Demographics
Objectives. We have documented little cigar and cigarillo (LCC) availability, advertising, and price in the point-of-sale environment and examined associations with neighborhood demographics. Methods. We used a multimodal real-time surveillance system to survey LCCs in 750 licensed tobacco retail outlets that sold tobacco products in Washington, DC. Using multivariate models, we examined the odds of LCC availability, the number of storefront exte…
Trajectories of maternal depressive symptoms, maternal sensitivity, and children's functioning at school entry
Using data from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development, the authors modeled trajectories of maternal depressive symptoms from infant age 1 month to 7 years. The authors identified 6 trajectories of maternal depressive symptoms: high-chronic, moderate-increasing, high-decreasing, intermittent, moderate-stable, and low-stable. Women on these depression trajectories varied in soci…
