  • We are not out of the woods yet

    Helena Duffy•ARTICLE•Holocaust Studies•2024•Referencias: 11

The article examines Ida as an intervention in the politicized debate about Polish-Jewish relations. Adopting an ecocritical lens, it focuses on the forest which shelters a Jewish family, before enabling their murder by the Polish rescuer's son. This ambiguity serves to counter the accusations of anti-Polishness and antisemitism levelled at Ida in Poland. The article also reframes Pawlikowski's representation of the forest with Pierre Nora's 'pla…

  • Like Sheep to the Slaughter’

    Open Access•Helena Duffy•ARTICLE•German Life and Letters•2024

This article examines the writings of Wolfdietrich Schnurre (1920–89) through a combined lens of zoocriticism and Holocaust studies. Drawing on Anna Barcz's concept of ‘vulnerable realism’, it posits an analogy between Jews targeted by the Nazis’ exterminatory programme, who struggled to articulate their suffering in the language of empirical historiography, and animals who, excluded from the human system of moral rights and laws, have no means o…

  • Motherhood During and After the Holocaust

Helena Duffy•ARTICLE•The Journal of Holocaust Research•2020

Hitler stated that 'one gestating Jewish mother posed a greater threat [to Aryan purity] than any fighting man' 1 and claimed that 'every child that a woman brings into the world is a battle [] for the purity of race.' 2 These pronouncements point to the fact that the Nazis made annihilation of Jewish mothers their strategic objective. However, until recently, mainstream Holocaust historiography paid scant attention to the specificity of the mothe…

  • The Silence of the Mothers

    Helena Duffy•ARTICLE•The Journal of Holocaust Research•2020•Referencias: 2

The present article offers a comparative reading of Spiegelman's Maus (1980–1991) and Claudel's Brodeck [Le Rapport de Brodeck] (2007). Separated by their formal differences and autobiographical/fictional contingencies, the two narratives are united by their postmodern aura. They also appear to promulgate the well-documented marginalization of the feminine perspective in Holocaust literature. I argue, however, that Maus and Brodeck simultaneously…

  • Philippe Claudel’s Brodeck as a parody of the fable or the Holocaust universalized

    Helena Duffy•ARTICLE•Holocaust Studies•2018•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 8

This article examines Philippe Claudel’s 2007 novel Brodeck (French title: Le Rapport de Brodeck) that allegorizes the Holocaust by parodying tropes and narrative structures characteristic to fairy tales and fables. While analyzing the author’s simultaneous inscription and subversion of the two ancient genres, I speculate about the possible reasons for his narrative choices and consider the meanings generated by his indirect representation of the…

  • In Search of Carnivalesque Anomie

Helena Duffy•ARTICLE•Journal of War and Culture Studies•2015•Referencias: 9

Focusing on The Crime of Olga Arbyelina (1998), Andreï Makine's fifth and arguably most complex novel, the article investigates the eponymous protagonist's intriguing scepticism about the Liberation. It does so by placing Olga's story in an intratextual context of Makine's other works of fiction whose protagonists are similarly reluctant to welcome peace at the end of World War II and are equally at odds with post-war society. However, unlike the…

  • The veteran's wounded body before the mirror

Helena Duffy•ARTICLE•Journal of War and Culture Studies•2008•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 5

A central point of historical reference in the writing of contemporary Russian-born French author, Andre Makine, namely the Second World War, which redrew the map of Europe and redressed the balance of power in world politics, both to the advantage of the Soviet Union, allows this highly successful novelist to remind his western readers of Russia's former military might and to re-posit the Soviet regime generally seen as a perpetrator of crimes a…
