Projecting future mortality risk of pleural mesothelioma in Italy (2020–2034)
Introduction: Italy, a major former producer, banned asbestos in 1992. A high incidence of mesothelioma, one of the asbestos legacies, is still observed due to the long latency and exposure from residual asbestos-containing materials. Future mortality forecasts at both national and subnational levels are still lacking. This work aims to project future age-stratified mortality rates (2020-2034) for pleural mesothelioma (PM) in Italy, both national…
“Aria di Ricerca in Valle del Serchio”
Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) represents a growing global public health issue, with an estimated prevalence of around 11% in the most developed countries. This study, conducted as part of the European project CitieS-Health, aimed to estimate the prevalence of CKD in the Serchio Valley, Tuscany, Italy, an area subject to environmental contamination from various sources, including a potentially polluting copper foundry. Methods: This cro…
Spatial Analysis of Shared Risk Factors between Pleural and Ovarian Cancer Mortality in Lombardy (Italy)
We found evidence of a shared risk factor between ovarian and pleural cancer at the small geographical level. The impact of the shared risk factor can be relevant and can go unnoticed when the prevalence of other risk factors for ovarian cancer is low. Bayesian modelling provides useful information to tailor epidemiological surveillance
Mortality for Lung Cancer among PVC Baggers Employed in the Vinyl Chloride Industry
Vinyl-chloride monomer (VCM) is classified as a known carcinogen of the liver; for lung cancer, some results suggest a potential association with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) dust. We evaluated the relationship between lung cancer mortality and exposure as PVC baggers in a cohort of workers involved in VCM production and polymerization in Porto Marghera (Venice, Italy) considering both employment status and smoking habits. The workers were studied be…
Research is in the air in Valle del Serchio
In this paper, we will present an ongoing Citizen Science (CS) project in environmental epidemiology in five European countries focussing on the Italian pilot study conducted in the Serchio Valley (Tuscany). The area is rich in natural, cultural and historic significance, but it also suffers from environmental contamination from a variety of sources, including industry, which is a health concern for the local population. The study is framed as a …
Exposure to Perfluoroalkyl Substances and Mortality for Covid-19
In conclusion, we observed a higher mortality risk for COVID-19 in a population heavily exposed to PFAS, which was possibly explained by PFAS immunosuppression, bioaccumulation in lung tissue, or pre-existing disease being related to PFAS

Hypertensive disorders are common complications during pregnancy (HDP) with substantial public health impact. Acute and chronic particulate matter (PM) exposure during pregnancy increases the risk of HDP, although the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) may be the ideal candidates for mediating the effects of PM exposure in pregnancy as they are released in response to environmental stimuli. The INSIDE pro…
A Panel Study on Lung Function and Bronchial Inflammation among Children Exposed to Ambient SO2 from an Oil Refinery
To determine the acute effects on respiratory function of children exposed to sulphur dioxide (SO2), we conducted two population-based longitudinal investigations near a major oil refinery. We enrolled 233 children, age 8−14, in Sarroch (Italy). The first study entailed five monthly spirometric visits (Panel 5). In a subgroup, children positive for history of respiratory symptoms were tested weekly (20 times) with spirometry and fractional exhale…
Comparison of two statistical indicators in communicating epidemiological results to the population
Communicating epidemiological results to the population is not a neutral task. The degree of concern and judgments when comparing results on different diseases may depend on the risk indicators used. Translating scientific results into lay language should not exempt from careful evaluation of the impact of this translation on lay people
Differences in the carcinogenic evaluation of glyphosate between the International Agency for Research on Cancer (Iarc) and the European Food Safety Authority (Efsa)

Impact of heat on mortality in 15 European cities
BACKGROUND: High ambient summer temperatures have been shown to influence daily mortality in cities across Europe. Quantification of the population mortality burden attributable to heat is crucial to the development of adaptive approaches. The impact of summer heat on mortality for 15 European cities during the 1990s was evaluated, under hypothetical temperature scenarios warmer and cooler than the mean and under future scenarios derived from the…
Heat Effects on Mortality in 15 European Cities
BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic studies show that high temperatures are related to mortality, but little is known about the exposure-response function and the lagged effect of heat. We report the associations between daily maximum apparent temperature and daily deaths during the warm season in 15 European cities. METHODS: The city-specific analyses were based on generalized estimating equations and the city-specific results were combined in a Bayesian …
Impact of High Temperatures on Mortality
BACKGROUND: Mortality during sustained periods of hot weather is generally regarded as being in excess of what would be predicted from smooth temperature-mortality gradients estimated using standard time-series regression models. However, the evidence for an effect of continuous days of exceptional heat ("heat wave effect") is indirect. In addition, because some interventions may be triggered only during forecasted heat waves, it would be helpful…
The role of individual and contextual socioeconomic circumstances on mortality
Study objective: To evaluate the independent and mutual effects of neighbourhood deprivation and of individual socioeconomic conditions on mortality and to assess the trends over the past 30 years and the residual neighbourhood heterogeneity. Design: General and cause specific mortality was analysed as a function of time period, highest educational level achieved, housing conditions, and neighbourhood deprivation, using multilevel Poisson models …
