Nuove ricerche nel territorio di Cutrofiano (Lecce) - Puglia meridionale
Negli anni ‘80 del secolo scorso il territorio di Cutrofiano è stato per la prima volta oggetto di ricerche archeologiche attraverso raccolte non sistematiche di materiali in superficie. Adesso nuove acquisizioni consentono di proporre un’analisi più precisa dell’occupazione di quest’area. Alla luce dei risultati di alcuni decenni di ricerche sistematiche sul popolamento nella Puglia meridionale in età preromana, il presente contributo costituisce l’occasione per una riflessione sulla topologia del sacro. I contesti cultuali vengono esaminati nell’ambito delle fasi dell’età del Ferro, dell’età arcaica e dell’età ellenistica, con particolare riferimento alla loro collocazione nell’ambito degli insediamenti ovvero alla loro connessio…
Offerings and rituals in a Messapian holy place
Archaeological investigations carried out in 1999 in the town centre of Vaste (inland from Otranto, Puglia, Southern Italy) have brought to light a sanctuary dating back to the end of the fourth/beginning of the third century bc. The holy place appears to have been dedicated to a female deity whose name, Oxxo, is painted on a cup and carved into a stone basin. The sacred area includes a building divided into rooms with fireplaces and three large …
Radiocarbon Age Anomalies in Pre- and Post-Bomb Land Snails from the Coastal Mediterranean Basin
The shell carbonate of pre- and post-bomb samples of 2 species of terrestrial gastropods ( Theba pisana and Cernuella virgata ) sampled along the coast of Apulia, southern Italy, were dated using accelerator mass spectrometry and carbon stable isotopes were analyzed. The analyses show, for both species, significant anomalies in the radiocarbon age due to the possible presence of a 14 C-depleted source of carbon in the formation of the shell arago…
