  • Carbon sequestration in western Canadian peat highly sensitive to Holocene wet-dry climate cycles at millennial timescales

    Open Access•Zicheng Yu, I Campbell et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2003•Citada por: 11•Referencias: 3

A high-resolution fen peat record and 79 basal peat dates from paludified peatlands in continental western Canada provide evidence for cyclic change in moisture conditions and in peat carbon accumulation. The ash-free bulk density, a proxy for degree of peat decomposition and thus moisture conditions, shows periodicities at both millennial (from 1500 to 2190 yr, with a mean of 1785 yr) and century scales (386 yr and 667 yr). Wet periods of 200–60…

  • Millennial-Scale Rhythms in Peatlands in the Western Interior of Canada and in the Global Carbon Cycle

    Open Access•I Campbell, Ian D Campbell et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2000

A natural ∼1450-yr global Holocene climate periodicity underlies a portion of the present global warming trend. Calibrated basal radiocarbon dates from 71 paludified peatlands across the western interior of Canada demonstrate that this periodicity regulated western Canadian peatland initiation. Peatlands, the largest terrestrial carbon pool, and their carbon-budgets are sensitive to hydrological fluctuations. The global atmospheric carbon-budget …

  • Late Holocene Lake Sedimentology and Climate Change in Southern Alberta, Canada

    Open Access•Celina Campbell•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1998

Climatic changes in southern Alberta, Canada, for the past 4000 yr are reflected in a high-resolution record of lake sediment grain size. The proposed mechanism for this response is that outflow discharge removes fine-grained sediments, but increasingly fine sediments are retained and deposited as streamflow declines. At the same time, coarse sediments are brought in by high discharge entering the lake. The net effect of these two processes is to…

  • Calibration, Review, and Geomorphic Implications of Postglacial Radiocarbon Ages in Southeastern Alberta, Canada

    Open Access•Celina Campbell, IAN A CAMPBELL•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1997

Calibration of radiocarbon dates of postglacial geomorphic events in southeastern Alberta, Canada, reveals a strong association between type of geomorphic event and seasonality of insolation. The late glacial and postglacial periods can be divided into four major episodes: glaciation, ca. >20,000 cal yr B.P.; deglaciation, ca. 20,000–12,000 cal yr B.P.; landscape stability, ca. 12,000–10,000 cal yr B.P.; and landscape instability, ca. 10,000–0 ca…
