Caprine management at Archaic and Classical period Argilos in northern Greece
This paper contributes new data on animal management practices from the Greek Archaic and Classical periods. Management strategies and season of birth of caprines from the city of Argilos (ca. 655 − 357 BC) are established through the analysis of stable carbon and oxygen isotope ratios of sequentially sampled tooth enamel. The results reveal a variety of management regimes being practiced by farmers at ancient Argilos, with no observable differen…
Mineral natron, plant-ash and high-alumina byzantine glass bracelets
Oxygen isotope analysis of pygmy hippo’s fossil bone and tooth apatite from Aghia Napa, Cyprus
First Speleothem Evidence of the Hiera Eruption (197 BC), Santorini, Greece
Speleothems are useful in detecting past geoenvironmental events. Variations in trace element concentrations may constitute a diagnostic of volcanic eruptions, enabling both dating and environmental impact assessment. This work attempts to detect possible ‘signatures’ of past volcanic eruptions in speleothems from Zoodochos Pigi cave on Santorini. Higher-than-usual concentrations of elements and minerals (e.g. barium and monazite respectively) ex…
Isotopic reconstruction of diet in Medieval Thebes (Greece)
Using stable isotope technique in order to assess the dietary habits of a Roman population in Greece
The fingerprint of Greek raw materials in the composition of ancient glasses with “unexpected” isotopic compositions
Provenance of polychrome and colourless 8th–4th century BC glass from Pieria, Greece
Tracing the primary production location of core-formed glass vessels, Mediterranean Group I
Deciphering late Quaternary land snail shell δ 18 O and δ 13 C from Franchthi Cave (Argolid, Greece)
This paper investigates the stable isotopic composition from late Pleistocene–Holocene (~ 13 to ~ 10.5 cal ka BP) shells of the land snail Helix figulina , from Franchthi Cave (Greece). It explores the palaeoclimatic and palaeoenvironmental implications of the isotope palaeoecology of archaeological shells at the time of human occupation of the cave. Modern shells from around the cave were also analysed and their isotopic signatures compared with…
Palaeoclimatic information from isotopic signatures of Late Pleistocene Ursus ingressus bone and teeth apatite (Loutra Arideas Cave, Macedonia, Greece)
Scientific Characterization of the Pohorje Marbles, Slovenia
As a former part of the great Roman Empire, Slovenia has many archaeological sites featuring buildings and objects entirely or partly constructed from marble whose provenance is doubtful. In Slovenia, the most probable source of such marble is the Pohorje Mountains. For the purpose of supporting further provenance studies, these marbles are fully scientifically characterized. The techniques used are petrographic and geochemical analysis, stable i…
Marble Provenance Investigation of Roman Sarcophagi From Thessaloniki
The provenance question of the marbles used for making the sarcophagi of local production of Thessaloniki in the Roman period had been posed by archaeologists in the past. The hypothesis was that the material came mainly from the quarries of Thassos Island. This paper presents the scientific analysis of 23 characteristic samples from selected sarcophagi at the Museum of Thessaloniki, using three different techniques: electron paramagnetic resonan…
