Work engagement and work-family facilitation
Although work engagement has been shown to be associated with positive job attitudes and behaviors, no research has investigated its relationship with work-family issues. To address this, the current longitudinal, experience-sampling study aimed to determine the relationship between daily work engagement and work-to-family facilitation. A total of 52 extension agents responded to two daily surveys for two weeks. Results indicate that both work en…
Work‐related flow and energy at work and at home
In this diary study, we aimed to examine the moderating effects of the following: (i) recovery efforts at work and (ii) detachment from work on the relationship between work‐related flow and energy after work. Specifically, we hypothesized that flow would be beneficial for energy after work when employees failed (versus managed) to recover during work breaks. Additionally, we predicted that when employees experience flow at work, they would be mo…
Flow at work
One of the core constructs of the positive psychology movement is that of ‘flow’, or optimal experience. The current study investigated the relationship between ‘flow’, the core job dimensions, and subjective well‐being (SWB), as well as distinguishing between the state and trait components of flow. Experience sampling methodology (ESM) was used to track 40 architectural students over a 15 week semester while they engaged in studio work. Hierarch…
Managerial Sex-Role Stereotyping
Sex-role stereotyping of middle management and the nature of sex stereotypes were investigated in two culturally distinct student samples from Turkey and Sweden. Based on existing empirical and theoretical evidence it was hypothesized that there would be considerably less sex-role stereotyping of management in Sweden than in Turkey. Findings of this study were also compared with those reported by Schein and Mueller on US, British, and German samp…
Operationalizing the outcomes of union commitment
In contrast to the past and current reliance upon a unidimensional or additive index of union participation, our research presents evidence of the multidimensional nature of the construct of union participation, a behavioral manifestation of union commitment. In this study, we examined a more diverse set of items than typically used in studies of union commitment and participation, ranging from holding union office to voting and to the more munda…
A model of the antecedents of early union commitment
The present study aimed at investigating the influence of shop steward characteristics and early union socialization experiences on new members' attitudes toward unions and their affective commitment to the union. Two thousand surveys were mailed to the most recent members of the National Association of Letter Carriers. Of these, 658 (33 per cent) were returned. Focusing on those individuals who had joined the union within the past 12 months yiel…

The socialization of union loyalty
The present study investigated the effects of a specific union socialization program on union attitudes and loyalty. Seventy‐one apprentices undergoing a union‐management training program were surveyed. Using linear structural relations modelling, the research found that union attitudes and training satisfaction were the most important predictors of loyalty to the union. Furthermore, attitudes to unions were related to the union socialization pro…
The union and its members
This work explores three key topics in social psychology: the manner in which labor unions shape organizational behavior, a relationship which has been effectively ignored in the literature; the organization of the union itself, a fascinating test case for the organizational psychologist; and the way in which theories and methods of organizational psychology may assist labor organizations in achieving their goals. Since the union maintains unique…
Predictors and outcomes of different patterns of organizational and union loyalty
This research identified four different patterns of loyalty to the organization and union in two Canadian unions ( N = 426): (1) loyalty to both company and union (dual allegiance/loyalty); (2) loyalty to neither the union nor the company (dual non‐allegiance); (3) loyalty to the union, but not the company (unilateral union loyalty); and (4) loyalty to the company, but not the union (unilateral company allegiance). The predictors and consequences…
Predicting employee commitment to company and union
The adequacy of Mowday, Porter & Steers' (1982) model of organizational commitment for predicting both company and union commitment was assessed. Data were obtained from 100 members of a white‐collar union. Two months before this study, they had taken part in a three‐week strike and were still involved in a dispute with management. Measures of company and union commitment were regressed separately on work experiences (job satisfaction, job involv…
Employment commitment as a moderator of the maternal employment status/child behavior relationship
Research findings suggest that maternal employment exerts no consistent detrimental effects on children. In this study, the moderating role of employment commitment and child sex on the relationship between maternal employment status and child behavior is investigated. Mothers and teachers provided behavioral ratings for 185 elementary school children ( M age = 9.42 years). Employment commitment moderated the influence of employment status on mot…
Psychology and Labour
Traditionally, industrial psychology has tended to neglect the area of organized labour and trade unions. This is especially so in South Africa where little reference is made to the issues of labour in industrial psychological texts used at universities. Two questions are posed: (i) Can industrial psychology make a valid contribution to the area of industrial relations, or is its neglect a function of its irrelevance? (ii) Why has industrial psyc…
Social Learning Theory
Most of the current research on consumer reactions to advertisements has utilized explanations based on advertising models of consumer behaviour. The present study assessed the utility of social learning theory approaches to advertising effectiveness. Orthogonal 2 times; 2 × 2 times; 2 (race of model × sexiness of model × race of observer × sex of observer) ANOVAs were computed on 160 subjects' recall of an advertisement, attitudes to that advert…
