Faith through the storm
We examined associations among age, religiosity, state hope and post-traumatic growth (PTG) in 128 adults after the 2021 Hurricane Ida (M age = 54.5 years, SD = 19.6, age range 18–88 years). Half of the participants experienced structural damage to homes and property (directly affected) while the other half lived farther inland and had less damage and storm disruption (indirectly affected). All were tested in person or virtually via Zoom platform…
Practical Memory Concerns in Oldest-Old Adults
Numerous studies document age-related declines in memory using laboratory-based measures, yet little research exists on what older people might have to say about their memory in daily life. The present research examined how age-related memory changes are perceived, managed, remediated, and feared among 50 very old adults. Participants answered nine open-ended questions that tapped four complementary dimensions: memory self-efficacy, memory manage…

Religiosity and Social Support Predict Resilience in Older Adults After a Flood
In this study, we examined religiosity and social support as predictors of resilience after a devastating flood. Three flood exposure groups of primarily middle-aged and older adults were compared: (1) non-flooded adults as controls, (2) once-flooded adults with structural damage to homes and property in the 2016 flood, and (3) twice-flooded adults who had relocated inland because of prior catastrophic losses in the 2005 Hurricanes Katrina and Ri…
When reliance on religion falters
In 2005, Hurricane Katrina brought devastating losses to Gulf Coast communities. In this study, Katrina survivors answered open-ended questions about coping with hurricane-related challenges. The sample was partitioned into low and high scorers on a non-organizational religiosity scale. Content analyses revealed that low scorers described secular strategies, relied less on a church community in the aftermath of the storms, and exhibited active re…

Religion and Coping With Trauma
In this article, we consider the intersection of religious coping and the experience of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in a lifespan sample of adults living in South Louisiana during the 2005 storms. Participants were young, middle-age, older, and oldest-old adults who were interviewed during the post-disaster recovery period. Qualitative analyses confirmed that three dimensions of religion were represented across participants' responses. These dime…
After Hurricanes Katrina and Rita
We examined health-related quality of life in adults in the Louisiana Health Aging Study (LHAS) after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita (HK/R) that made landfall on the U.S. Gulf Coast region in 2005. Analyses of pre- and post-disaster SF-36 scores yielded changes in physical function and bodily pain. Mental health scores were lower for women than men. Gender differences were observed in religious beliefs and religious coping, favoring women. Religious…
Lifespan Perspectives on Natural Disasters
Age and Individual Differences in Working Memory
The authors introduced the Size Judgment Span (SJS) task, a working memory measure developed for use with persons of varied educational backgrounds and general intellectual ability. The authors pooled data from 5 published articles where the SJS task and other measures of cognitive performance were administered to create an archival data set with 496 participants. Analyses of these data yielded strong evidence of age and individual ability differ…

Regulation of Emotion and Behavior Among 3- and 5-Year-Olds
In this cross-sectional study, the authors examined the relationship between emotion and behavior regulation in 3- and 5-year olds. Eighty-seven children performed a compliance sorting task. The authors manipulated the demand for emotion regulation by presenting and then hiding toys (low) or making toys visible (high). Mothers and teachers rated children's coping responses. Five-year-olds sorted less in the high condition than in the low conditio…
Age-Related Differences in Spatial Memory
The authors examined effects of structural and organizational spatial context on younger and older adults' memory for an arrangement of dollhouse furniture pieces. For half of the participants, landmark objects (Experiment 1) and a floor plan beneath the array (Experiment 2) served as structural context during study and replacement. Organizational context was varied by grouping items randomly or as 6 rooms in a prototypical house. Two study and r…
