Situational Antecedents to Leisure Behavior
Five "need" theories of leisure behavior (surplus energy, relaxation, catharsis, compensation and task generalization) are outlined and their implications for a situation-response model of leisure behavior discussed. A Leisure Behavior Inventory (LBI) is described. It was constructed to ascertain whether the activities a person would like to participate in during one time period are affected by the experiences or situations he encounters in the p…
Comparison of a Time Diary and Recall Questionnaire for Surveying Leisure Activities
Sample participation rates in 35 leisure activities, obtained from responses to recall questionnaires, were compared to those obtained from responses to time diaries for a sample of 30 university s

Sources of behavioral variance during leisure time
2 samples of 49 and 91 undergraduates rated how much they would feel like participating in each of a set of leisure activities in each of 10 hypothetical situations. The resulting matrices of responses were analyzed into the estimated variance components associated with persons, situations, modes of response, and their various interactions. These sources of variance in leisure behavior were compared to those reported by N. S. Endler and J. Hunt f…
Stability of the Factor Structure of Leisure Behavior
Separate factor analyses of the reported leisure activities of respondents in four community surveys were performed. Essentially the same three factors were obtained in all four samples. The three dimensions of leisure behavior suggested by the factors were called Active-Diversionary, Potency, and Status. Correlations of factor scores with other variables supported these interpretations of the factors. Some theoretical, methodological, and practi…
Quasitherapeutic effects of intergroup competition
Nine combat engineering squads competed in their training and garrison duties to test the hypothesis that inter-group competition promotes close interpersonal relations among group members and improves morale and adjustment. Eighteen squads for whom no changes in training were introduced served as controls. Questionnaire measures of interpersonal relations and adjustment were obtained before and after a three month experimental period. Changes in…
