    Julie S Son, Guangzhou Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•2024•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 51

There is substantial research on the constraint negotiation of leisure, including research on leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) and some research exploring different aspects that might affect the constraint negotiation process, including self-efficacy and identity. However, despite longstanding conceptualization and theory, there is a lack of empirical research on the role of facilitators in the constraint negotiation process. The purpose of …

This study explored the experiences of social support and friendship among older women who played softball. Focus groups were conducted with women on six softball teams associated with the North Carolina Senior Games. Focus groups were audio-recor…

    Julie S Son, Galit Nimrod et al.•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•2021•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 23

Staying healthy while following social distancing protocols is of great importance to older adults due to increased risk of serious complications from COVID-19. Mild to moderate physical activity improves immune system responses to viral respiratory infections. Additionally, social engagement has cumulative health protective benefits across the lifespan. At present, active and social recreation opportunities have been drastically reduced or disba…

    Julie S Son, Stephanie T West et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Leisure Research•2021•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 5

The purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of a newly proposed scale, the Sport Facilitators in Later Life Scale (SFLLS). Based on empirical work, the authors developed a 30-item scale to measure middle-aged and older adults’ recreational sport facilitators, including items on municipal parks- and recreation-based facilitators. Among a national sample of 1207 adults aged 50 and older, factor analysis supported a three-fa…

    Open Access•Stephanie West, Stephanie T West•ARTICLE•Scripta classica Israelica•2020•Citada por: 2

Nearly 150 years ago J.W. Blakesley, in the introduction to his commentary, protested against anachronistic assumptions about the manner in which Herodotus gathered his material: 'Every one accustomed to the facilities which the present time offers involuntarily attributes to any individual of the same social position with himself similar methods of effecting any given purpose -unconsciously forgetting the entirely different conditions of so cial…

  • Who ought to receive what? An instrument to assess a community's preferred strategy for allocating leisure service resources

    Stephanie T West, John L Crompton•ARTICLE•World Leisure & Recreation•2013•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 9

All are likely to agree that resources for public leisure services should be allocated equitably, that is, fairly. Equity is a pseudo-cognate term in that many who use it assume that everyone has the same intuitive definition of it. This is a fallacious assumption. There are multiple and diverse interpretations of what is meant by equity. Since interpretations reflect value systems, they are likely to vary across communities. This article develop…

  • The Association of Location and Social Context with Physical Activity Enjoyment in a Population of Able Bodied Rural Aging Women

Daniel Theriault, Daniel S Theriault et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Leisure Research•2010•Referencias: 4

Collectively, rural aging women experience a physical activity disparity compared to younger, male, and urban populations. Research suggests that enjoyment of physical activity may function as an antecedent to participation and also as an outcome that can encourage future leisure time physical activity. This study examines how rural women's choice of leisure time physical activity location and activity companions informs their enjoyment of that p…

This paper revises an earlier taxonomy of equity models that was published in this journal in 1988. This revised taxonomy consists of three elements. First, it extends the original taxonomy by proposing a set of moral philosophies, positioning them as antecedents of the operational strategies that determine equity outcomes. Six are identified: Rawlsian, egalitarianism, benefit principle, utilitarianism, libertarianism and paternal professionalism…
