A qualitative investigation of early childhood teachers’ experiences of rhythm as pedagogy
Rhythm has been found to enhance not only biological functioning (e.g. balance, timing and coordination), but also to facilitate learning across sociocultural contexts. That is, rhythm may be a method of supporting child development and well-being. Hence, to the extent that children are not exposed to or engaged with rhythm, their development or the realization of their full potential may be limited. However, little research has explored the use …

Leisure, Stress, and Coping
Research has indicated that there is a relationship between stress and participation in leisure (Caltabiano, 1995; Chalip, Thomas, & Voyle, 1992; Reich & Zautra, 1981; Strauss-Blasche, Ekmekcioglu, & Marktl, 2002; Warner-Smith & Brown, 2002; Wheeler & Frank, 1988). It has been suggested that leisure buffers or mediates stress, thereby enhancing individual health and well-being, because of the self-determination and social support that are experie…

Redefining Family, Redefining Leisure
Valeria J. Freysinger, Guest Editor Miami University Department of Physical Education, Health, and Sport Studies Oxford, OH 45056 A little more than a decade ago, Journal of Leisure Research (JLR) published a review of literature on leisure and families that made a number of recommendations for future research in this area based on extant research, recommendations engendered by this research, and an assessment of relevant theory (Holman & Epperso…
The Dialectics of Leisure and Development for Women and Men in Mid-life
Research on the meaning of leisure, while taking account of gender, has not situated leisure meaning within the context of age. Age is not only a biological and psychological variable but a socio-cultural and historical one as well that is likely to hold significance for leisure meaning. Hence, the purpose of this study was to explore from a developmental perspective the meaning of leisure among women and men in midlife, and if and how gender dis…
The activity involvement of women and men in young and middle adulthood
In a secondary analyses of a 36‐year panel study of 267 Euro‐American women and men, this research examined gender differences in (a) the frequency of individuals’ involvement in discretionary or free‐time activity in young and middle adulthood, (b) change in activity involvement between young and middle adulthood, and (c) predictors of activity involvement in young and middle adulthood. Activity involvement included participation in recreational…
Leisure With Children and Parental Satisfaction
While it is often claimed that leisure enhances family quality and cohesion, little empirical research exists on this relationship (Orthner & Mancini, 1990). In particular, the relationship between satisfaction with the parental role and leisure interaction with children has not been examined. Given that individuals today exercise some choice about becoming parents and that anticipated satisfactions might influence individuals' decisions to pursu…
Women's Leisure
Because of leisure's relationship to the quality of life, mental health, and development, access to or opportunity for leisure has been the topic of much study. This research has shown that women across cultures face numerous constraints to leisure—both material and ideological. Leisure is a context of women's oppression and exploitation. However, oppression or hegemony “is never complete, always in the process of being reimposed, and always capa…
