The Health Impact of Living with a Cognitively Impaired Elderly Spouse
The purpose of this study was to identify the health consequences of living with a cognitively impaired spouse in a sample of 318 spouse pairs, drawn from a representative sample of noninstitutionalized elderly individuals. Our principal findings were that (a) cognitive impairment in wives was significantly (p < .05) associated with elevated systolic blood pressure in husbands, whereas cognitive impairment in husbands was not associated with syst…
The Risk of Nursing Home Admission in Three Communities
Beginning in 1982, the 3-year incidence of nursing home admission was determined for community-dwelling residents aged 65 and over in East Boston, Massachusetts (4%); New Haven, Connecticut (9%); and Iowa and Washington Counties, Iowa (12%). A common methodology was used to collect baseline risk factor and follow-up data on nursing home admissions among persons in each community as part of the National Institute on Aging's Established Populations…
Attachment Theory and Multiple Dimensions of Grief
In this article data from questionnaires completed by acutely bereaved widows and widowers were examined to identify the dimensions of psychological distress associated with bereavement. Using factor analysis, four factors that were meaningfully understood within the framework of attachment theory were found. These findings were consistent with the idea that grief is not a simple, decrescendoing emotional state, but rather a complex, evolving pro…
Depressive Symptoms in Relation to Physical Health and Functioning in the Elderly
The associations between depressive symptoms and functional disability and chronic conditions are examined in an elderly cohort of 2,806 noninstitutionalized men and women living in New Haven, Connecticut who were interviewed in 1982 as a part of the Yale Health and Aging Project. The aim is to explore several potential sources of invalidity in using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression scale (CES-D) to measure depressive symptoms in e…
The measurement of grief
Age and sex variation in the expression of grief were examined using a structured assessment to test clinically based impressions that (1) widowers by comparison with widows and (2) older bereaved persons by comparison with middle‐aged counterparts would report distinctive aspects of grief and less intense distress. One hundred and fourteen acutely bereaved spouses were interviewed one month after a loss. The psychological assessment used was des…
Psychosocial Predictors of Mortality Among the Elderly Poor
Zuckerman, D. M., S. V. Kasl (Yale U. School of Medicine, New Haven, CT 06510) and A. M. Ostfeld. Psychosocial predictors of mortality among the elderly poor: the role of religion, well-being, and social contacts. Am J Epidemiol 1984; 119: 41–23. Mortality data during a two-year follow-up were obtained on some 400 elderly poor residents of New Haven, Hartford, and West Haven, Connecticut, in 1972–1974. These subjects were cases and controls in a …
Urinary-Free Cortisol Excretion in Relation to Age in Acutely Stressed Persons with Depressive Symptoms
We examined the relationship between age and urinary excretion of free cortisol in acutely stressed middle-aged and elderly persons. We observed that elderly persons under stress excreted larger amounts of urinary-free cortisol than did middle-aged persons; Pearson's r between age and cortisol = 0.38, p less than 0.05. When the sample was stratified by severity of depressive symptoms, the relationship between age and cortisol excretion was strong…
Hostility, Risk of Coronary Heart Disease, and Mortality
Level of hostility (Ho) was assessed by a 50-item subscale of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory at the initial examination of 1877 employed middle-aged men who were free of coronary heart disease (CHD). Ten-year incidence of major CHD events (myocardial infarction and CHD death) was lowest in the first quintile of the Ho scale's distribution, highest in the middle quintile, and intermediate in the other three quintiles. After adjust…
Crowding in Prison
The relationship between change in mode of housing and corresponding blood pressure (BP) change was investigated among 568 male prisoners as an analogue to animal studies which have shown that crowding elevates BP. The transfer from single occupancy cells to multiple occupancy dormitories was associated with a statistically significant mean increase in systolic blood pressure (SBP). In contrast, men who remained in single cells had little mean ch…
Psychological Depression and 17-Year Risk of Death from Cancer1
Psychological depression, measured in 1957-1958 by the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory at the baseline examination of 2,020 middle-aged employed men, was associated (p less than 0.001) with a twofold increase in odds of death from cancer during 17 years of follow-up. The association did not vary appreciably in magnitude among the early (1958-1962), middle (1963-1968), and later (1969-1974) years of follow-up, persisted after adjustmen…

An Epidemiological Review of the Mortality of Bereavement
Epidemiological literature revealing excess mortality in the newly widowed is reviewed. The risk varies by age and sex. Younger persons and men are at higher risk. There are manifold specific causes of death characterized by conditions manifest in middle and late life. Cause specificity also varies by sex. Methodological problems in this literature are mitigated by application of varied methodology and replication of basic findings. Socioeconomic…

Prospective and Retrospective Psychological Studies of Coronary Heart Disease
The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory was administered at the first and fifth annual examinations of 1990 men studied in a prospective investigation of coronary heart disease. These data were used to investigate the following questions--two potential sources of error in retrospective studies: Do survivors of the illness differ, on the variables being investigated, from persons who die before they can be included in a retrospective study…

Note on the Edwards Social Desirability Scale
A set of actual scores on the MMPI are compared with a set of SD-generated scores. However, the SD-generated scores are not obtained in the usual way, viz., from the mean SD score of Ss. Instead, the SD score of each S is taken separately and an MMPI profile is generated for him. 15 MMPI scales are examined. The differences between the actual means and the means of the SD-generated scores are evaluated using the t test and the Pearson product-mom…

Studies in Headache
The thesis that during vascular headache of the migraine type there is elaborated locally in extracranial tissues through neurone activity a tissue-damaging and a pain-threshold-lowering agent is supported by the following data: During a migraine headache attack there predictably occurred lowered deep pain thresholds and edema in those scalp areas in which headache was being experienced. Less commonly, hematomata and painful nodular accumulations…
