  • Examining the effects of caffeine during an auditory attention task

    Open Access•Tyler B Kruger, Mike J Dixon et al.•ARTICLE•Consciousness and Cognition•2024

Participants completed two sessions of an auditory attention task and intermittently responded to thought probes asking about their level of mind-wandering. After the first session one group received 200 mg of caffeinated chewing gum (n = 61) and another group received regular (placebo) chewing gum (n = 66). The gum was chewed for 20-minutes and then disposed of before beginning the second session. Participants who received caffeine showed a perf…

  • Dissemination Strategies and Usage of Psychological Assistance Hotlines During the Covid-19 Outbreak in China

Open Access•Ruofan Ma, Rin Nguyen et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Communication•2020

When the 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) was rapidly spreading in China in early 2020, China’s National Health Commission quickly responded to the psychological crisis by issuing guidelines for establishing mental health intervention systems, including providing psychological assistance hotlines. However, recent critiques have emphasized China’s lack of pre-established mental health interventions which resulted in an inefficient respons…

  • A Multilevel Analysis of the Interpersonal Behavior of Socially Anxious People

Open Access•Jonathan M Oakman, Jonathan Oakman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•2003

We investigate the interpersonal behavior of socially anxious (SA) and non‐socially anxious (NSA) individuals at three different levels of analysis, focusing on the dimensions of warmth and dominance. Study 1 examines self‐reported general interaction styles, Study 2 explores behavior occurring within the context of a single interaction, and in Study 3 we focus on the performance of a single conversational act (a disagreement). Studies 1 and 2 ad…

  • A reexamination of the role of nonhypnotic suggestibility in hypnotic responding

Erik Woody, Erik Z Woody et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1997

An alcohol-placebo paradigm was used to measure individual differences in the tendency to have directly suggested, as well as unsuggested, alterations in experience. Using the spectral analytic technique of C. G. Balthazard and E. Z. Woody (1992), such alterations in experience were found to be differentially correlated with the easiest items of the Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility, Form A. The results indicated that easy hypnotic p…

  • A taxometric analysis of hypnotic susceptibility

Jonathan M Oakman, Erik Woody et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1996

The possibility that hypnotic ability is typological rather than dimensional was evaluated in a series of 4 studies. Study I used two samples of mass-testing measures of hypnotic ability, which were analyzed using the MAXCOV-HITMAX method ( P. E. Meehl, 1973). Results of these analyses were in keeping with the existence of a latent typology in hypnotic ability scores. Study 2 investigated the possibility that these results could be a false-positi…
