Factorial and Predictive Validity of First Graders' Scores on the Early Reading Screening Instrument
The factorial and predictive validity of the Early Reading Screening Instrument was examined for 105 first grade students. Analysis indicated that the test is unidimensional and can predict first grade reading skills at the end of the school year with at least a moderate amount of accuracy. Validity and Reliability of the Vowel Matching Test
Validity and reliability evidence is presented for the Vowel Matching Test (VMT), an instrument that measures primary grade children's ability to discriminate medial vowel sounds. The VMT consists of a series of seven picture sets, each set containing a stimulus picture and three item pictures. Based on the responses of 43 first-grade pupils, the results indicated that the VMT correlated .76 with a word recognition test. It exhibited an internal …
Determination of Mastery Scores When Instructional Units Are Linearly Related
A procedure is described for the determination of individual mastery scores when instructional units are sequenced in a linear hierarchy. It is deemed appropriate when test data for these units have already been collected. Based on an overall evaluation for the whole sequence, a mastery score for the last unit is determined first. Musical Tasks Related to the Development of the Conservation of Metric Time
In order to provide information concerning the development of musical concepts in young children, musical tasks related to Piaget's concept of conservation of metric time were presented to second- and third-grade children. The results indicated that children who played musical instruments did not perform significantly better than their peerswho did not play musical instruments.
