The Sexual Compulsivity Scale
We examined the reliability and validity of the Sexual Compulsivity Scale for use in assessing HIV-positive men and women. Measures collected from 287 men and women recruited from the community, the majority of whom were African American and over the age of 30, showed that the Sexual Compulsivity Scale was reliable for men (alpha = .89) and women (alpha = .92). Correlations with measures of sexual behaviors and numbers of sex partners supported t…

Initial Development of Scales to Assess Self-Efficacy for Disclosing HIV Status and Negotiating Safer Sex in HIV-Positive Persons
Unwanted sexual experiences and sexual risks in gay and bisexual men
Unwanted sexual experiences are associated with high‐risk sexual practices for HIV infection. The current study examined histories of unwanted sexual contact in childhood and adulthood in relation to HIV risk behavior in men who have sex with men. Men attending a large gay pride event in Atlanta, Georgia (N = 595) completed anonymous surveys measuring sexual history, substance use, sexual risk behavior, and symptoms of dissociation, trauma‐relate…

Distinguishing between Overlapping Somatic Symptoms of Depression and HIV Disease in People Living with HIV-Aids
HIV-AIDS is a prevalent medical diagnosis in U.S. cities, and symptoms of depression are common in persons with HIV infection. This study examined the effects of overlapping symptoms of HIV disease and somatic depression that can inflate scores on the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the Centers for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CESD). Results from 357 HIV positive men and women identified discrete subsets of depression symptoms th…
Sexual Sensation Seeking and Sexual Compulsivity Scales
Two studies are presented that evaluate newly developed scales of sensation seeking and sexual compulsivity. Results showed that the scales were reliable and correlated with convergent and divergent measures in expected directions in samples of both gay men (N = 296) and inner city low-income men and women (N = 158). Consistent with theories of sensation seeking, the scales corresponded to an attraction toward a range of sexual practices, includi…
Sexually coerced and noncoerced gay and bisexual men
Sexual coercion is a well‐recognized problem among heterosexuals, but it has been understudied in homosexual relationships and could be a contributing factor in risk for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. One hundred ninety‐six gay and bisexual men completed measures of sexual behavior history, sexual coercion experiences, psychological distress, and intentions to resist risk in the future. Results showed that 29% of participants (n = …
Sexual Sensation Seeking
Sensation seeking, the propensity to prefer exciting, optimal, and novel stimulation or arousal, is a potential mediating factor in sexual risk for human immunodeficiency virus infection (HIV), the cause of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). However, the most widely used measure of sensation seeking, the Sensation Seeking Scale (Zuckerman, Kolin, Price, & Zoob, 1964), contains numerous culturally outdated items and items that do not perta…
