  • Building Trust and Engaging Communities for HIV Prevention Research Globally

Michele Andrasik, Gail Broder et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Education•2026

The HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN) is the largest publicly funded international collaboration facilitating the evaluation of vaccines to prevent HIV and TB. Central to the HVTN's success is the reliance on robust community engagement methods, ensuring community participation and facilitating community awareness and knowledge of research. Community engagement is a dynamic process that requires active participation from all stakeholders to ensur…

Emily Greene, José E Diaz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•2025•Referencias: 79

COVID-19 shelter-in-place orders were critical in preventing the spread of SARS CoV-2 virus but may have disrupted care for people living with HIV, including access to antiretroviral treatment (ART). Understanding how COVID-19 restrictions affected ART adherence is a public health concern. Neighborhoods, Networks and HIV (NNHIV) is an ongoing longitudinal cohort study evaluating the impact of neighborhoods and networks on HIV care engagement amon…

  • Correlates of concordance between self-reported and lab-confirmed viral load among Black and Latine men who have sex with men (BLMSM) living with HIV in New York City

Emily Greene, Melonie Walcott et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2024

Sustained viral suppression is one of the four strategies in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) plan to end the HIV epidemic in the United States. Individuals living with HIV must understand their viral load accurately for this strategy to be effective. We conducted cross-sectional analyses using baseline data from the NNHIV longitudinal study among men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV in New York City to identify …

  • Locating the Risk

Trisha Arnold, Thomas J Stopka et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2021•Referencias: 4

HIV incidence among African American (AA) young men who have sex with men (YMSM) has remained stable even though they made up the largest number of new HIV diagnoses among men who have sex with men (MSM) in 2017. HIV spreads at increased rates in dense sexual networks. Identifying the location of risk behaviors "activity spaces" could inform geographically circumscribed HIV prevention interventions. Utilizing the modified social ecological model …

  • Psychosocial Obstacles to Smoking Cessation Attempts Among Young Adult Sexual Minority Women Who Smoke

Jose Bauermeister, Emily J Youatt et al.•ARTICLE•Behavioral Medicine•2017

Sexual minority women (SMW; i.e., women who identify their sexuality as lesbian, bisexual, or something other than heterosexual) report greater smoking behaviors than their heterosexual counterparts across all ages. We conducted a multivariable regression to examine the correlates of prior smoking cessation attempts and smoking cessation intentions in a sample of young SMW who smoke (N = 338; aged 18-24 years). Covariates included sociodemographi…

  • Exploring Young Adult Sexual Minority Women's Perspectives on LGBTQ Smoking

    Emily J Youatt, Michelle M Johns et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of LGBT Youth•2015•Referencias: 7

Smoking rates are higher among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals than among heterosexuals. These disparities are exacerbated during the transition from youth to young adulthood. The current study uses in-depth qualitative interviews to understand perceptions of LGBTQ smoking among LBQ-identified women (N=30, ages 18-24). Major themes identified include the belief that smoking was a way of overcoming stressors face…

  • PrEP Awareness and Perceived Barriers Among Single Young Men who have Sex with Men

Jose Bauermeister, Steven Meanley et al.•ARTICLE•Current HIV Research•2014

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has the potential to help reduce new HIV infections among young men who have sex with men (YMSM). Using a cross-sectional survey of YMSM (N=1,507; ages 18-24), we gauged YMSM's PrEP awareness and PrEP-related beliefs regarding side effects, accessibility, and affordability. Overall, 27% of the sample had heard about PrEP; 1% reported ever using PrEP prior to sex. In a multivariate logistic regression, we found that…

  • LGBT Community, Social Network Characteristics, and Smoking Behaviors in Young Sexual Minority Women

    Open Access•Michelle M Johns, Emily Pingel et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Community…•2013•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 34

Smoking rates among young sexual minority women (YSMW) are disproportionately high as compared to heterosexual populations. While this disparity has commonly been attributed to the sexual minority stress process, little empirical work has explored what may protect YSMW from high rates of smoking. Using data (N = 471) from a cross‐sectional study designed to investigate YSMW's (age 18–24) smoking behaviors and correlates; we explore the relationsh…

  • Comparison of the consumption of antidepressants in the immigrant and native populations in a Spanish health region

Open Access•Inês Cruz, Catalina Serna et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2010

All the immigrants, regardless of the country of origin, had lower antidepressant consumption than the native population of the same age and sex. Latin American women presented the highest levels of consumption, and the sub-Saharan men the lowest. The prescription profiles also differed, since immigrants consumed more generics and fewer recently commercialized active ingredients
