Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health training for early years practitioners
The importance of Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health (IECMH) in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) is increasingly recognised. This study evaluates the effectiveness of an IECMH training programme designed to enhance Early Years Practitioners’ (EYPs) skills in promoting children’s social-emotional well-being and development. IECMH training aims to equip EYPs with the knowledge and capacity to support children’s ability to form interp…
Developing an assessment of vocabulary proficiency for Irish-English bilingual children
Assessing vocabulary knowledge is an important part of establishing language proficiency in bilingual children. The crosslinguistic lexical tasks (CLTs) provide a framework for testing vocabulary development in three-to-six year-olds using a standard procedure and comparable items for multiple languages. This study describes the development of the Irish CLTs to test receptive and expressive vocabulary for nouns and verbs. The test was then used i…
Findings from the first phase of developing a receptive vocabulary test for the Irish language
Aims and objectives: The aim of this study was to develop and pilot a test of receptive vocabulary for bilingual Irish-English-speaking children, based on a model from Welsh. Design/Methodology/Approach: 310 typically developing children aged five, six and seven years took part. The children were all attending Irish-medium education in Irish-dominant Gaeltacht regions and in immersion education schools outside of these regions. Data and Analysis:…
The impact of a first-generation immigrant environment on the heritage language
The expressive lexical skills of 53 Polish bilinguals aged 24–36 months living in the UK and Ireland were assessed using Polish and British English adaptations of the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories. Polish vocabulary scores were compared to those of 53 Polish monolinguals matched for age, gender and parental education. The bilinguals were born to two Polish parents and mostly lived outside Poland since birth. Results showed…
Bilingual language acquisition in a minority context
This study investigated the role of language exposure in vocabulary acquisition in Irish, a threatened minority language in Ireland which is usually acquired with English in a bilingual context. Using a bilingual Irish–English adaptation of the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories) [Fenson, L., V. A. Marchman, D. J. Thal, P. S. Dale, J. S. Reznick, and E. Bates. 2007. The MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories. 2nd…
Risk and protective environmental factors for early bilingual language acquisition
Young children’s vocabulary skills impact their phonological, semantic and syntactic development (Chiat 2000). It is inevitable, therefore, that small expressive vocabularies showing laboured growt
Parent report of early lexical production in bilingual children
This paper compared the vocabulary size of a group of 250 bilinguals aged 24–36 months acquiring six different language pairs using an analogous tool, and attempted to identify factors that influence vocabulary sizes and ultimately place children at risk for language delay. Each research group used adaptations of the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories: Words and Sentences and a specially designed developmental and language back…
Profiling vocabulary acquisition in Irish
Investigations into early vocabulary development, including the timing of the acquisition of nouns, verbs and closed-class words, have produced conflicting results, both within and across languages. Studying vocabulary development in Irish can contribute to this area, as it has potentially informative features such as a VSO word order, and semantically rich prepositions. This study used a parent report adapted for Irish, to measure vocabulary dev…
