This contribution examines the historiographical problem of the alleged conversion of ʻUmar b. Ḥafṣūn to Christianity, drawing upon modern scholarly debate and, in particular, a philological analysis of the Arabic sources. The examination of the chronicles, especially that of Ibn Ḥayyān, reveals a systematic use of Islamic theological terminology (nifāq, irtidād, riddah, kufr, širk) that defines apostasy with juridical precision. Furthermore, the…

Open Access•Juan Pedro Monferrer Sala•ARTICLE•Anaquel de Estudios Árabes•2026

This article1 undertakes a critical examination of the three documents employed by Simonet in his treatment of the ecclesiastical divisions of Hispania and their respective suffragan sees—namely, an excerptum from the Codex miscellaneus ovetensis, an extract from the so-called ‘Mozarabic Codex’ of Isidore of Seville’s Etymologiae, and a further text drawn from al-Qānūn al-Muqaddas (The Holy Canon). The objective is to assess the accuracy of Simon…

    Open Access•Juan Pedro Monferrer Sala•ARTICLE•Isidorianum•2024

  • Tools for a Discursive Ontological Method

    Juan Pedro Monferrer Sala•ARTICLE•Islam and Christian–Muslim…•2022•Referencias: 1

This article examines the use of Islamic sources in a fragmentary text, the Tathlīth al-waḥdāniyya (‘Trebling the Oneness’), written by an anonymous Jewish convert to Christianity. The author’s aim was to demonstrate – using an ontological approach – the inconsistent nature of the arguments employed by his Muslim opponents, and at the same time to highlight the unacceptable practices of Muslims with regard to divorce and adultery. The fragments h…

  • Traductores bilingües latino-árabes andalusíes

    Open Access•Juan Pedro Monferrer Sala•ARTICLE•Cuadernos del CEMyR•2021

The interestingt task carried out by the bilingual Andalusi Latin-Arabic translators helped to build a literary heritage of enormous importance for the Christians of al-Andalus. The high level of Arabization exhibited by these texts informs us about how Christian intellectuals participated in the knowledge coming from the East, but also allowed them to transfer part of their Latin legacy to the new language of the Andalusi State, the Arabic langu…

Open Access•Juan Pedro Monferrer Sala•ARTICLE•Anaquel de Estudios Árabes•2015

In this paper we study a fragment about the Arab queen Ma‘wiyā included in the karšūnī version of Michael the Great’s Chronicle (d. 1199 BC) compared with the Syriac Vorlage. Our aim is to analyze the differences between the Syriac text and its Arabic version rendered by the translator

  • Translating the Gospels into Arabic from Syriac

Juan Pedro Monferrer-Sala, Juan Pedro Monferrer Sala•ARTICLE•Arabica•2015

We analyze two pericopes (Mt 3, 1-12, 13-17) of the Arabic version contained in Codex Vat. Ar. 13 corresponding to the restored section of the Gospels rendered from an original Syriac text. Our aim in this article is to contribute to the hypothesis that the two sections of the translation of the Gospels have been made from two different originals. So while the text contained in the oldest section has been translated from a Greek original, though …

Open Access•Juan Pedro Monferrer-Sala, Juan Pedro Monferrer Sala•ARTICLE•Al-Qanṭara•2012

  • Babel’s Dawn and the Primeval Language. Between Translation and Narrative, or the Syriac Version of an Old Jewish Tradition

Open Access•Juan Pedro Monferrer-Sala, Juan Pedro Monferrer Sala•ARTICLE•Humanities•2012

The story of the Tower of Babel in Gn 11:1–9 gave rise to a rich literary tradition, in which the topos of the primeval language emerged. Whereas the interpretative tradition originating among the Jewish commentators upheld that the original language was Hebrew, in the heart of the Eastern Christian communities some authors supported this theory, but others stated it to be Aramaic. The aim of the present article is to show how a celebrated chroni…

The study focuses on a defective Hadith transmitted by the Andalusī traditionalist ʻAbd al-Malik ibn Ḥabīb (d. 852), which presents an old cosmogonic vision of the cosmos. The matn of this Hadith exhibits conc…
