Bob Rennick made important contributions to name study in place names, personal names, names and the law, and humorous names, but he was best known for his excellent state-wide dictionary, Kentucky Place Names (1984) and his little book on unusual Kentucky names, From Red Hot to Monkey's Eyebrow (1997)

    Open Access•Thomas J Gasque•ARTICLE•Names•2003

Thank you for allowing me the honor to serve as the president of the American Name Society for the last two years. My membership in ANS extends back twenty years, a short time in comparison to many of you here, but I well remember my first annual meeting in 1983,right here in New York City. I attended the banquet, held in the dining room of a hotel across the street from the Hilton, the MLA headquarters hotel. It was also the first time that I ha…

  • My Life in Names

    Open Access•Thomas J Gasque•ARTICLE•Names•2001

My first realization that people actually study names and their origins came from the librarian in my home town of Marion, South Carolina, who showed me an annual periodical called Names in South Carolina (NISC). The one name that I remember is "Wongway Creek," and the article suggested that the name was a misspelling of "wrongway," since the stream flowed in a direction opposite to other nearby creeks. Although my memory of this name is sharp, a…

  • Structure and Controversy

To deal with proposals for new placenames and to arbitrate disputes over existing names, state names agencies have adopted a variety of methods and structures, ranging from large committees to individuals, to make recommendations to the Domestic Names Committee of the United States Board on Geographic Names. These authorities have often found themselves involved in controversy. In recent years the concern has been over the use of derogatory names…

Studies of nicknames have neglected social fraternities, and most have been done by outsiders unable to assess the feelings of those who bear nicknames. I questioned members of a social fraternity to which I belonged in the late 1950s to find out how men felt about their nicknames then and now. Nicknames were found to be either endearing or critical, functioning as social controls

  • The Study of Names as Humor in the Thirty–Nine Years of the Journal Names

    Open Access•Thomas J Gasque•ARTICLE•Names•1991•Referencias: 11

Perhaps as a reaction against the popular emphasis on the humorous aspect of name study, the journal Names has devoted relatively little space to the study of names as humor. Those scholarly studies that have appeared in the journal over the nearly four decades of its existence include name puzzles, wordplay in names, humorous personal names (especially in the South), euphemisms for Hell, and humorous folkore about specific names
