Ianir Milevski, Elisabetta Boaretto et al.•ARTICLE•Atiqot•2025

At the site of Er-Rujum, located on the western slopes of the Ramallah Anticline in the northern part of the Ayyalon Valley, an Intermediate Bronze Age site was discovered below Ottoman-period rujums. The salvage excavations at the ancient tell of Lod revealed six strata (I–VI). Stratum I consisted of much-disturbed topsoil. The partial remains of three buildings were uncovered in Stratum II, dated to the Byzantine period. Stratum III consisted of sand deposits with a high concentration of MB I potsherds. Stratum IV represented the main phase of human occupation at the site, containing the remains of two superimposed settlements (Strata IVa, I…

  • A Roman ship scuttled near Salona in the Gulf of Kaštela, Croatia

Open Access•David Ruff, Irena Radić Rossi et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeonautica•2021

In 2002, the recovery of a 1000-litre perforated dolium in the Trstenik section of Kaštel Sućurac, near Split, Croatia, attracted the attention of archaeologists to significant Roman remains submerged near the shore. A return visit to the site in 2006 identified the outline of a wooden ship scuttled alongside a submerged wooden wall: in 2015, the ship was uncovered and labelled, recorded via photogrammetry and extensively sampled, then preserved …

  • Microhistory in Archaeology and Its Contribution to the Archaeological Research

The unique “Cave of the Warrior” burial, found in a Judean Desert cave and dated to the end of the Chalcolithic period, was accompanied by a large number of grave goods made of perishable materials. It opens up an unusual opportunity to recover aspects of the life of an individual person. Based on a reexamination of his personal belongings, we created a microhistory of this individual. We show how a careful analysis of a single-event site contrib…

Deposits rich in bioarchaeological materials were unearthed in two dovecotes found near Sa‘adon, a Byzantine-period village (5th–6th century CE) in the semi-arid part of the Negev. One structure contained a layer of pigeon manure and articulated pigeon skeletons, preserved occupation levels and evidence of sudden destruction (mid-6th century CE), whereas the other lacked distinct occupation debris indicting more orderly human abandonment. The one-armed anchor was dated by 14C to the Late Iron Age—Persian Period, and the second anchor to the Roman Period. The saline water of the Dead Sea preserved the wood and ropes, but corroded almost all the metal parts. A thin black crust of lead and a green crust of copper are the only remains of the collar of the Roman anchor. …
