  • Learn! – A New Type of Inscription on a Sling Bullet from Hippos of the Decapolis

Open Access•Michael Eisenberg, Arleta Kowalewska et al.•ARTICLE•Palestine Exploration Quarterly•2026•Referencias: 1

This paper introduces a unique inscribed lead sling bullet (slingshot) found at Hippos of the Decapolis in 2025. The item was recovered with a metal detector within the Southern Necropolis, close to the bed of the Sussita Stream, where an ancient road passed. The bullet, most probably launched by the city defenders at attackers coming up the road, carries Greek letters ΜΑΘΟΥ. This previously unattested inscription can be interpreted as a sarcasti…

  • The Southern Photisterion at the Hippos Cathedral and its Unique Byzantine-Period Liturgical Implements

    Open Access•Michael Eisenberg, Arleta Kowalewska•ARTICLE•Palestine Exploration Quarterly•2026•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 1

Recent excavations at the Byzantine-period cathedral of Hippos above the Sea of Galilee have exposed part of an annexed photisterion (a hall with a baptismal font) and inside it a unique set of ecclesiastical items. While the bronze candelabrum and the marble reliquary, although exceptionally large, are known liturgical implements, the marble stone with three hemispheric cavities, probably meant for holding oils, is previously unattested, and may…

  • A Chalcolithic presence east of the Sea of Galilee

Karolina Hruby, Arleta Kowalewska et al.•ARTICLE•Palestine Exploration Quarterly•2024•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 8

The characteristics and settlement patterns of the Early–Middle Chalcolithic period (ca. 5,800– 4,700 cal bc) around the Sea of Galilee have hardly been studied so far. The regional diversity of Chalcolithic material culture and the fragmentary nature of the archaeological record hinder a broader understanding of socio-cultural processes in this area. Chalcolithic architecture and finds, excavated for the last 23 years under the Graeco-Roman city…

  • Funerary podia of Hippos of the Decapolis and the phenomenon in the Roman world

    Open Access•Michael Eisenberg, Arleta Kowalewska•ARTICLE•Journal of Roman Archaeology•2021•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 5

In the Roman world a wide variety of funerary architecture was erected along the access roads of cities to catch the eye of passersby. In Hippos (Sussita in Aramaic) of the Decapolis, the most notable funerary structures stood along the city's main approach within the Saddle Necropolis. The most distinctive elements of the necropolis's architectural remains were a series of 13 large funerary podia – the focus of the 2020 excavations. The Hippos p…

  • Masons’ Marks of Antiochia Hippos

    Arleta Kowalewska, Michael Eisenberg•ARTICLE•Tel Aviv•2019•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 2

Masons’ marks, though often not fully documented, interpreted and researched, are well-attested at sites from the Classical periods. This article presents a complete study of masons’ marks from Antiochia Hippos of the Decapolis. The survey of the site yielded 374 Roman-period marks: 359 used for accounts and 15 probably used for indication of assembly order. The presence of masons’ marks on some of the structures at Hippos and other Roman-period …
