  • Saving and Letting Live

    Open Access•Thomas N Byrne•ARTICLE•Philosophy and Phenomenological…•2025•Referencias: 5

There is a metaphysical difference between person A killing person B and A merely letting B die. There is also a metaphysical difference between A saving B and A merely letting B live. This paper argues that the metaphysical difference between saving and letting live gives rise to a moral difference. It then puts that moral difference to work: for example, it accounts for the long‐felt moral difference between failing to rescue a drowning child a…

  • The Dawn of the Phenomenology of Feelings

    Thomas Byrne, Thomas N Byrne•ARTICLE•Philosophy Today•2024

This essay reshapes our understanding of the origin and trajectory of the phenomenology of feelings. In contrast to accepted interpretations, I show that Husserl’s 1896 manuscript “Approval, Value, and Evidence”—and not his 1901 Logical Investigations—is the foundation of his subsequent phenomenology of feelings as it is found in Lectures on Ethics and Value Theory, Ideas I, and other manuscripts. This is for two reasons. First, in the 1896 manus…

  • Increasing the risk that someone will die without increasing the risk that you will kill them

    Open Access•Thomas N Byrne•ARTICLE•Philosophy and Phenomenological…•2022•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 1

I consider cases where you increase the risk that, e.g., someone will die, without increasing the risk that you will kill them: in particular, cases in which that increasing of risk is accompanied by a decreasing of risk of the same degree such that the risk imposition has been offset. I defend the moral legitimacy of such offsetting, including carbon‐offsetting

  • Patterns of Multiple Instability among Low-Income Families with Children

    Yoonsook Ha, Margaret M C Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•Social Service Review•2020•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 10

Low-income families experience multiple forms of instability, yet researchers have often focused on a single type of instability. This study used data from the Survey of Income and Program Participation and examined patterns of multiple instability among low-income families with children, focusing on income, family structure, and residential instability. We employed sequence and cluster analyses to identify five distinct longitudinal profiles of …

  • The Relationship between Community Investment in Permanent Supportive Housing and Chronic Homelessness

    Thomas Byrne, Thomas N Byrne et al.•ARTICLE•Social Service Review•2014•Citada por: 14•Referencias: 1

In recent years, permanent supportive housing (PSH) has emerged as the preferred intervention for addressing chronic homelessness in the United States. However, almost all prior studies examining the effectiveness of PSH have been conducted at the individual level, with only minimal attempts to empirically test the relationship between PSH and chronic homelessness at the community level. This study uses longitudinal data collected by the US Depar…
