  • The tacit dimension and behavioural public policy

    Open Access•Agnès Festré, Stein Østbye•ARTICLE•Behavioural Public Policy•2024•Referencias: 8

In this paper, we revisit the Knowledge Problem addressed by Hayek eight decades ago and emphasised more recently by Rizzo and Whitman in their critique of the new paternalist approach of mainstream behavioural economics promoted by Sunstein and Thaler. We do this in light of the work of Michael Polanyi. Polanyi developed a theory of knowledge which has some commonalities with Hayek’s but also departs from it by emphasising the tacit, personal an…

  • Scraping the bottom of the barrel? Evidence on social mobility and internal migration from rural areas in nineteenth-century Norway

Open Access•Mikko Moilanen, Sindre Myhr et al.•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Economic History…•2022

We aim to answer whether expected occupational gains motivated rural-urban and rural-rural migration in nineteenth-century Norway. Human capital theory indicates that the higher expected gains, the more prone an individual will be to migrate. We use a micro-level data set of over 42,000 rural sons linked to their fathers based on 1865 and 1900 Norwegian censuses and employ a switching endogenous regression model controlling for the endogeneity of…

  • On rational forward-looking behavior in economic geography

Open Access•Iván Barreda‐Tarrazona, Tapas Kundu et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Science and Urban…•2021

This paper adapts the canonical New Economic Geography model for experimental testing of the model's behavioral assumptions by developing a finite-player, finite-horizon dynamic game of migration. Our analysis gives distinctive predictions when migration is consistent with myopic behavior (MB) and when it is consistent with sequentially rational or perfect forward-looking behavior (FB). These alternatives are tested in an economic laboratory expe…

  • Machine learning and the identification of Smart Specialisation thematic networks in Arctic Scandinavia

    Open Access•Mikko Moilanen, Stein Østbye et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2021•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 2

The European Union (EU) has recognized that universities and research institutes play a critical role in regional Smart Specialisation processes. Our research aims to identify thematic cross-border research domains across space and disciplines in Arctic Scandinavia. We identify potential domains using an unsupervised machine-learning technique (topic modelling). We uncover latent topics based on similarities in the vocabulary of research papers. …

  • The creative class

Stein Østbye, Mikko Moilanen et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2017•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 6

Regional adjustment models are applied to explore causal interaction between two types of people distinguished by educational attainment, and two types of jobs: creative class jobs and other jobs. Data used are for labour market regions in Finland, Norway and Sweden from the 2000s. Creative class jobs follow people with high educational attainment (one way causation), but creative class jobs also follow other jobs and vice versa (circular causati…

  • Industrial structure, regional productivity and convergence

    Open Access•Stein Østbye, Olle Westerlund•ARTICLE•European Urban and Regional Studies•2010•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 8

Are less productive regions catching up with more productive regions? In this paper we investigate the importance of regional industry structure for regional productivity convergence. We use county data for the Scandinavian Peninsula. Norway and Sweden are similar in many respects and the Scandinavian Peninsula therefore represents an attractive natural laboratory with one country inside and another outside the European Union. The data cover five…

  • Is Migration Important for Regional Convergence? Comparative Evidence for Norwegian and Swedish Counties, 1980–2000

    Stein Østbye, Olle Westerlund•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2007•Citada por: 14•Referencias: 3

n Abstract \n \nRegional convergence studies have relied on net migration data in assessing the impact of migration. With heterogeneous labour, the implied symmetrical treatment of immigration and emigration cannot be justified a priori. Because of heterogeneity among migrants, gross migration flows may lead to considerable interregional redistribution of human capital even when net migration is zero. Moreover, the effects of regional economic co…
