This article examines the relationship between knowledge, political counsel, and reason of state in Giovanni Botero (1544–1617). The Spanish theologian Juan Márquez OSA (1565–1621) explores new ways of instructing the conscience of prince and counsellor. Fray Juan wrote his treatise El governador christiano (1612) as a defence of Catholic moral theology.
