  • Evaluation of the effectiveness of HDR tone-mapping operators for photogrammetric applications

Open Access•Rossella Suma, Georgia Stavropoulou et al.•ARTICLE•Virtual Archaeology Review•2016

The ability of High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging to capture the full range of lighting in a scene has meant that it is being increasingly used for Cultural Heritage (CH) applications. Photogrammetric techniques allow the semi-automatic production of 3D models from a sequence of images. Current photogrammetric methods are not always effective in reconstructing images under harsh lighting conditions, as significant geometric details may not have bee…

  • Drawing Philosophical Lessons from Perrin’s Experiments on Brownian Motion

Alan Chalmers, Alan F Chalmers•ARTICLE•The British Journal for the…•2011•Citada por: 6

In a recent article, van Fraassen has taken issue with the use to which Perrin’s experiments on Brownian motion have been put by philosophers, especially those defending scientific realism. He defends an alternative position by analysing the details of Perrin’s case in its historical context. In this reply, I argue that van Fraassen has not done the job well enough and I extend and in some respects attempt to correct his claims by close attention…

  • Multi-Sensory Virtual Environments for Investigating the Past

    Open Access•Alan Chalmers, Eva Zányi•ARTICLE•Virtual Archaeology Review•2010

A human depends on all five senses: visuals, audio, smell, taste and touch to perceive an environment. It is not only the individual senses, but also their interaction that plays a key role in enabling us to understand the world around us. Virtual archaeology is being increasingly used to investigate the past. Failure to consider all senses in these reconstructions runs the very real danger of misrepresenting ancient environments and how they may…

  • ArchHouseGenerator – A Framework for House Generation

Open Access•Nuno Rodrigues, Luís Magalhães et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Virtual Worlds Research•2010

The manual creation of virtual environments is a demanding and costly task. With the increasing demand for more complex models in different areas, such as the design of virtual worlds, video games and computer animated movies the need to generate them automatically has become more necessary than ever. This paper presents a framework for the automatic generation of houses based on architectural rules. This approach has some innovating features, inc…

  • The Theory-Dependence of the Use of Instruments in Science

    Open Access•Alan Chalmers, Alan F Chalmers•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•2003•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 5

The idea that the use of instruments in science is theory-dependent seems to threaten the extent to which the output of those instruments can act as an independent arbiter of theory. This issue is explored by studying an early use of the electron microscope to observe dislocations in crystals. It is shown that this usage did indeed involve the theory of the electron microscope but that, nevertheless, it was possible to argue strongly for the expe…
