  • Learning the Manchu Writing System

    Open Access•Bai Li, Victoria A Murphy et al.•ARTICLE•Reading Research Quarterly•2026•Referencias: 47

Characteristics of the Manchu writing system provide an excellent testing ground for current theorizing about orthography acquisition. Using traditionally demarcated orthographic units called uju hergen —symbol blocks representing phonological syllables—we investigated the role of visual features and phonological representations in learning the Manchu symbol set. Novice Manchu learners ( n = 196; 89.8% female; M age = 18.79) participated in two e…

  • Exploring Pedagogical Strategies for Developing Orthographic Knowledge

    Open Access•Bai Li, Victoria A Murphy et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Applied…•2025•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 2

Pedagogical strategies employed for developing orthographic knowledge are intricately tied to how learners approach word reading across writing systems. This empirical case study utilized thick description to document a teacher's pedagogical strategies for developing fundamental writing and reading (decoding) skills among novice learners of the Manchu language at a Chinese university. The teacher implemented a structured instructional procedure i…

  • Retracted Article

Open Access•Bai Li, Li Bai et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2024

Test anxiety is a combination of a confluence of physiological hyperarousal, tension, and bodily manifestations, with apprehension, trepidation, fear of inadequacy, and the tendency to magnify negative outcomes, which manifest before or during evaluative assessments. Online evaluation might potentially exacerbate anxiety and demotivation among learners. When students' psychological and emotional well-being are taken into account, it may be possib…

  • A study of factors impacting disease based on the Charlson Comorbidity Index in UK Biobank

Open Access•Changcong Wang, Xinyue Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

Objective: With advances in medical diagnosis, more people are diagnosed with more than one disease. The damage caused by different diseases varies, so relying solely on the number of diseases to represent multimorbidity is limited. The Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) is widely used to measure multimorbidity and has been validated in various studies. However, CCI's demographic and behavioral risk factors still need more exploration. Methods: We …

  • Comprehensive application of a systems approach to obesity prevention

Open Access•Bai Li, Li Bai et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

A systems approach to obesity prevention is increasingly urged. However, confusion exists on what a systems approach entails in practice, and the empirical evidence on this new approach is unclear. This scoping review aimed to identify and synthesise studies/programmes that have comprehensively applied a systems approach to obesity prevention in intervention development, delivery/implementation, and evaluation. By searching international database…

Improving the reporting of intervention studies underpinned by a systems approach to address obesity or other public health challenges

  • Ramadan fasting and weight change trajectories

Open Access•Daniel E Zoughbie, Tin Lok James Ng et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2022

Obesity is a significant driver of the global burden of non-communicable diseases. Fasting is one approach that has been shown to improve health outcomes. However, the effects of Ramadan fasting differ in that the type, frequency, quantity, and time of food consumption vary. This phenomenon requires in-depth evaluation considering that 90% of Muslims (~2 billion people) fast during Ramadan. To address this issue, we evaluated the pattern of weigh…

  • Determinants and drivers of young children’s diets in Latin America and the Caribbean

Open Access•Franziska Gassmann, Richard de Groot et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2022

The Latin America and Caribbean region exhibit some of the lowest undernutrition rates globally. Yet, disparities exist between and within countries and countries in the region increasingly face other pressing nutritional concerns, including overweight, micronutrient deficiencies and inadequate child feeding practices. This paper reports findings from a regional analysis to identify the determinants and drivers of children’s diets, with a focus o…

  • Exploring the potential targets of Sanshimao formula for hepatocellular carcinoma treatment by a method of network pharmacology combined with molecular biology

Open Access•Yu Qin, Qin Yu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnopharmacology•2022

This research preliminarily indicates that SSM treats HCC via multiple components and pathways. EGFR/FAK/AKT are promising therapeutic targets of SSM for HCC treatment. This provides objective evidence for further mechanistic research and the future development and clinical application of SSM in HCC patients

  • A qualitative insight into informal childcare and childhood obesity in children aged 0–5 years in the UK

Open Access•Eleanor Diana Lidgate, Bai Li et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

This exploratory qualitative study provided novel insights into potential explanations for the evidenced link between informal care and childhood obesity in children aged 0-5 years, despite a small size and limited participants in each focus group. Our findings support the idea of and inform the development towards an information based and low-cost intervention delivered through existing primary care platforms

  • Socioeconomic determinants of childhood obesity among primary school children in Guangzhou, China

Open Access•Weijia Liu, Wei Liu et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2016

The socioeconomic gradient for childhood obesity in China is the reverse of the patterns seen in countries at more advanced stages of the obesity epidemic. This presents an opportunity to intervene and prevent the onset of social inequalities that are likely to ensue with further economic development. The marked gender inequality in obesity needs further exploration

  • Urinary Concentrations of Toxic and Essential Trace Elements among Rural Residents in Hainan Island, China

Open Access•Yosuke Inoue, Masahiro Umezaki et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2014

The degree of community-level economic development was positively associated with urinary cadmium concentration while individual involvement in the market economy was positively associated with lead and selenium
