An Assessment of Norplant Removal in Indonesia
From 1987 to 1997, approximately four million Indonesian women had a Norplant insertion. Concerns have been raised about the timely removal of the implant within a few days of the user's request or at the end of the recommended five years of use and about the possibility of a large and rapidly increasing backlog of removal cases developing. This study of 2,979 Indonesian women in 14 provinces, all of whom had had Norplant inserted five or more ye…
The Situation Analysis Study of the Family Planning Program in Kenya
A new, relatively "quick and clean" operations research approach called a "situation analysis" was developed for examining the strengths and weaknesses of the family planning program of Kenya. Field research teams visited a stratified random sample of 99 of the Ministry of Health's approximately 775 service delivery points. Observation techniques and interviewing were used to collect information on program components and on the quality of care pr…
Maintaining Family Planning Acceptance Levels through Development Incentives in Northeastern Thailand
The results of a two-year longitudinal study of the effect that development program incentives have upon family planning in Northeastern Thailand are presented. These incentives, implemented by the Population and Community Development Association, Thailand, included animal raising and agricultural, home industry, and environmental activities. An experimental design including baseline and follow-up surveys supplemented by a continuous monitoring s…
Satisfied IUD Acceptors as Family Planning Motivators in Sri Lanka
In this study, government midwives were teamed with currently satisfied IUD acceptors to strengthen field motivational and recruitment efforts. The objective was to increase the number of new IUD acceptors. In the experimental study areas, a total of 3,019 new IUD acceptors were recruited. Time series regression analysis revealed a significant difference between the experimental and comparison areas that was over and above what might be expected …
Guidelines for Overcoming Design Problems in Family Planning Operations Research
This report is concerned with designs for field intervention studies utilized in operations research. Beginning with an overview of the objectives of operations research, the authors go on to review the difficulties associated with using "true experimental" designs. Proposed guidelines for designing quasi-experimental studies are then discussed. The guidelines focus on using multiple sources of data, multiple measurements over time, and multiple …
Family Planning Field Research Projects
This report discusses the experience of a two-year family planning and maternal/child health project in Nepal. Although the project was planned as an experimental field research endeavor, a series of unanticipated events repeatedly compromised the internal validity of the project and forced design changes. While unexpected events are common in the history of most field projects, they present the research evaluator with the fundamental dilemma of …
