  • Receipt of routine preventive care services among Medicaid enrollees with HIV

Jessica S Kiernan, Deo Mujwara et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2026

Preventive care receipt is suboptimal for people with HIV. Low physician reimbursement may play a role. We examined physician reimbursement and receipt of five annual preventive care services for Medicaid enrollees with HIV. We used person-level administrative claims (Medicaid Analytic eXtract, 2008-2012), state Medicaid-to-Medicare physician fee ratios representing state-level Medicaid primary care reimbursement relative to Medicare reimbursemen…

  • Drive time to care and retention in HIV care

Open Access•April D Kimmel, Rose S Bono et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2025

PURPOSE: Less than 50% of people with HIV (PWH) in the United States are retained in care, a key step along the HIV care continuum. We examined the impact of geographic access to care on retention in care for urban and rural PWH. METHODS: We used Medicaid claims and clinician data (Medicaid Analytic eXtract and MAX Provider Characteristics, 2009-2012) for 13 Southern states plus the District of Columbia. We calculated drive time from the enrollee…

  • Perceptions of African American Youth and Adults Regarding Tobacco Use-Related Factors in Their Community

    Cosima Hoetger, A A White et al.•ARTICLE•Family & Community Health•2024

Expanded tobacco prevention and cessation resources for B/AA people who smoke could leverage federal regulatory actions to ban tobacco products targeted toward this group and decrease disparities in tobacco-related morbidity and mortality

  • Urban-rural disparities in geographic accessibility to care for people living with HIV

Rose S Bono, Zhongzhe Pan et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2023

In the United States, people living with HIV (PLWH) in rural areas fare worse along the HIV care continuum than their urban counterparts; this may be due in part to limited geographic access to care. We estimated drive time to care for PLWH, focusing on urban-rural differences. Adult Medicaid enrollees living with HIV and their usual care clinicians were identified using administrative claims data from 14 states (Medicaid Analytic eXtract, 2009–2…

  • Smoking status and racial/ethnic disparities in youth exposure to tobacco advertising

Nicole E Nicksic, Rose S Bono et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnicity in Substance…•2020

Tobacco advertising exposure increases tobacco use among youth. Data were from a largely racial and ethnic minority sample (60% non-Hispanic (NH) Black/African American) of youth (13-18 years) who were nonsmokers susceptible to future tobacco use ( n = 686) or current cigarette smokers ( n = 674). Regression models tested associations between tobacco advertisement exposure and smoking status, and determined demographic correlates. Nearly all yout…

  • Influence of Electronic Cigarette Characteristics on Susceptibility, Perceptions, and Abuse Liability Indices among Combustible Tobacco Cigarette Smokers and Non-Smokers

Open Access•Cosima Hoetger, Rose S Bono et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

This study assessed how electronic cigarette (ECIG) characteristics amenable to regulation-namely nicotine content, flavor, and modified risk messages-impact ECIG use susceptibility, harm/addiction perceptions, and abuse liability indices among combustible tobacco cigarette (CTC) smokers and non-smokers. CTC smokers and non-smokers varying in ECIG use recruited via Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) completed an online survey in 2016 (analytic n = 70…

  • Structural barriers to comprehensive, coordinated HIV care

    April D Kimmel, Steven P Masiano et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2018

Structural barriers to HIV care are particularly challenging in the US South, which has higher HIV diagnosis rates, poverty, uninsurance, HIV stigma, and rurality, and fewer comprehensive public health programs versus other US regions. Focusing on one structural barrier, we examined geographic accessibility to comprehensive, coordinated HIV care (HIVCCC) in the US South. We integrated publicly available data to study travel time to HIVCCC in 16 S…

  • Assessing the coherence of narratives of traumatic events with latent semantic analysis

    Open Access•Scott R Vrana, Rose S Bono et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2018

These findings provide evidence that memories for trauma experiences are less coherent than neutral memories and suggest that writing helps to create a more coherent representation of a traumatic event, highlighting a potential mechanism for expressive writing's effects. Results demonstrate the utility of latent semantic analysis for examining coherence of memories of traumatic events. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved)

  • The Case for Considering Education and Health

    Open Access•Emily Zimmerman, Emily B Zimmerman et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Education•2018•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 55

Awareness of the impact of education on health remains relatively low among the public, professionals, and policy makers. Virginia Commonwealth University’s Center on Society and Health sought to raise awareness among key decision makers about the impact of education on health outcomes through its Education and Health Initiative (EHI). EHI utilized four key strategies to raise awareness: user-oriented research, strategic communication, local and …
