  • The rise of uncertified teachers and emerging impacts on educational leadership

Open Access•Katherine Cumings Mansfield, Wesley Edwards•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2026

Teacher shortages and staffing challenges are major concerns for educational leaders globally. For example, in several countries, population growth expands the demand for teachers; while concurrently, teachers are leaving the profession due to heavy workload, perceived lack of respect, and low morale ( Durden, 2023 ). This leaves head teachers, principals, and other educational leaders in vulnerable positions as they work to meet the needs of stu…

  • Glancing back and looking forward

Open Access•Conra D Gist, Wesley Edwards et al.•ARTICLE•Education Policy Analysis Archives•2024

The Handbook of Research on Teachers of Color and Indigenous Teachers charts the landscape of the educator diversity research base by focusing on 11 domains of inquiry. This paper is anchored in the lessons from the policy domain, and extends this scholarship by briefly synthesizing the historical origins of educator diversity policies, and ex…

Wesley Edwards, Kevin Russel Magill•ARTICLE•Educational Review•2024

The increased privatisation of educational systems is a global trend with several important implications for teachers’ preparation and workforce outcomes. With many countries facing teacher shortages, retention for novice teachers is a key area of focus for educational leaders and policymakers – yet there is a lack of evidence related to the relationship between new alternative pathways into the profession and retention patterns. Open Access•Wesley Edwards•ARTICLE•Urban Education•2024•Referencias: 58

Research suggests that work environments are associated with turnover patterns for teachers of Color. This study investigates variation in work environments using longitudinal administrative data from 20 large urban and suburban K-12 school districts. Results indicate that teachers of Color are more often employed in “hard-to-staff” work environments compared to their White colleagues. Despite this, findings demonstrate high relative levels of te…

  • Rethinking the educational ecology in the wake of Covid

Open Access•Wesley Edwards, Kevin Russel Magill•ARTICLE•Policy Futures in Education•2023

In this conceptual article, the authors examine changes to the United States educational ecology during the COVID-19 pandemic. This article draws on contemporary and historical research to critique how K–12 school policies and educational leadership decisions are made amidst a crisis. As schools and districts continue to navigate a shifting educational context, teachers are often left out of the discussion. The authors set out to argue that teach…

  • Innovation to what end? Exploring the dynamic landscape of Texas teacher preparation pathways

Open Access•Andrene Castro, Wesley Edwards et al.•ARTICLE•Education Policy Analysis Archives•2021

The teacher education and preparation marketplace is a complex mix of traditional and alternative programs. Though prior studies have identified a great deal of variation across these programs, an analysis of innovation has been limited. Drawing on theories of organizational innovation, and specifically, dimensions of innovation related to organizational structure, processes, and outcomes, we conduct an exploratory study of innovation in Texas’ t…

  • Fixing the Terms of Statelessness - Again

    Open Access•Wesley Edwards, W G Middleton Edwards•ARTICLE•Scottish Affairs•1998•Referencias: 10

A decade ago the political geographer John Agnew developed in the book Place and Politics (1987a) a provocative theory of place in the social sciences. Drawing empirical material from the electoral geography of both the United States and Scotland, Agnew sought to elevate place into a fundamental social science concept. This task, ambitiously and creatively undertaken and supported by careful political analysis of the two nations, was Agnew's effo…
