  • Sequence of agricultural water use for society

    Open Access•Chris Seijger•ARTICLE•International Journal of Water…•2026

This study centres on sequences of agricultural water use for society. Drawing on 36 international reorientation cases, defined as reforms in agricultural water management undertaken to accommodate shifts in societal priorities, it identifies one overarching sequence. Economic growth emerges as the primary driver of agricultural expansion and intensification. Yet societal priorities do shift, prompting changes in agricultural water management. Th…

  • Reducing unintended consequences of subsidies in (irrigated and rainfed) agriculture

    Open Access•Chris Seijger, Petra Hellegers•ARTICLE•Water Policy•2026

Rethinking agricultural subsidies has gained considerable attention as they serve important societal priorities, but also have unintended environmental and social effects on water. This paper combines insights from a literature review of 1,074 studies, a qualitative analysis of n = 48 studies, and recommendations for subsidy reform from an online seminar with 79 agricultural water management experts. The insight and recommendations show that agri…

  • Disintegration and discourse

    Open Access•Sabeth Häublein, Chris Seijger et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2024•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 17

Policy integration (PI) has been advocated in the literature as a solution to complex environmental problems. It is commonly defined as the joint development of policies across sectors, and deemed beneficial especially in face of cross-cutting issues. As there is little research addressing the ideational integration of two sectors, we introduce a new framework to discursively analyze horizontal policy integration (HPI) and then apply this framewo…

  • Water and sectoral policies in agriculture–forest frontiers

Open Access•Chris Seijger, Daniela Kleinschmit et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2021•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 55

Major land use changes such as deforestation and restoration influence water resources in agriculture–forest landscapes. Changes are observed in water flows, groundwater infiltration, water quality and rainfall. Interdisciplinary water–forest research has unravelled biophysical parts of the interplay that influences forest and water resources. In this Perspective paper, we propose an expanded interdisciplinary research approach to study water and…

  • Strengthening the knowledge base to face the impacts of climate change on water resources in Africa

    Open Access•Uta Wehn, Bertha Vallejo et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2020•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 7

While it is increasingly important to strengthen the existing knowledge base in Africa to adequately respond to the rising risks and impacts of climate change on water resources, a significant research gap remains to identify areas and mechanisms to cope with these societal challenges. The aim of the paper is twofold: i) to provide subject-specific insights by analyzing the current knowledge base in Africa given water-related challenges due to cl…

  • Sinking deltas

Open Access•Chris Seijger, Gerald Jan Ellen et al.•ARTICLE•Prometheus•2017

In delta areas, flood protection structures and large-scale land reclamation are preferential water management strategies to cultivate soft delta soils. Over the past decades, river embankments, upstream dams, land reclamation, and groundwater use have intensified, and increasingly contribute to subsidence. In addition, the influence of institutions implementing these strategies has strengthened as they have acquired technical skills, knowledge, …
