  • Assessing engineering students’ mathematics self-efficacy and mathematics anxiety levels in Latino contexts

    Open Access•Gustavo Morán-Soto, Lisa Benson•ARTICLE•Current Psychology•2024

  • In Memoriam Prof. Jeffrey E. Froyd

Open Access•John Mitchell, Lisa Benson•ARTICLE•IEEE Transactions on Education•2023

It is with a mix of great sadness, respect, and gratitude that we reflect on the passing of Prof. Jeffrey E. Froyd in October of 2022. We would like to first recall Jeff’s many accomplishments for those who may not have had the privilege of knowing him. Jeff received the B.S. degree in mathematics from the Rose–Hulman Institute of Technology, Terre Haute, IN, USA, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Min…

  • Mathematics Anxiety and Self-Efficacy of Mexican Engineering Students

    Open Access•Lisa Benson, Gustavo Morán-Soto et al.•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2022

Studies have reported that there is a gender disparity wherein women do not study equally to men in bachelor’s degrees in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) areas, although they lead the race of having a better terminal efficiency rate in higher education. This research explores engineering students’ math anxiety and math self-efficacy levels, aiming to determine if there is a gender gap for this specific population. Data were coll…

  • A grounded theory model of the dynamics of undergraduate engineering students' researcher identity and epistemic thinking

Open Access•Courtney Faber, Rachel Kajfez et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Science…•2022

Undergraduate research experiences (UREs) in science and engineering offer a number of positive outcomes to the students who are able to participate, including increased retention, clarified career goals, and development of problem‐solving skills. There have been a number of calls for research that investigates the experiences, identity, and cognitive develop of students who participate in UREs. In addition, recent work in other areas suggests th…

  • Valuing the contribution of blue carbon to small island developing states' climate change commitments and Covid-19 recovery

    Open Access•Ellen McHarg, Elena Mengo et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2022•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 2

  • Integrating blue

    Open Access•Amrit Melissa Dencer-Brown, Robyn Shilland et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2022•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 49

Blue Carbon Ecosystems (BCEs) help mitigate and adapt to climate change but their integration into policy, such as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), remains underdeveloped. Most BCE conservation requires community engagement, hence community-scale projects must be nested within the implementation of NDCs without compromising livelihoods or social justice. Thirty-three experts, drawn from academia, project development and policy, each de…

  • Anyone, but not Everyone

Jacqueline Rohde, Derrick Satterfield et al.•ARTICLE•Engineering Studies•2020•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 14

This paper examines students’ claims about who can become an engineer and what it takes in engineering culture to be successful. Through longitudinal interviews with 20 undergraduate engineering students, we found that participants’ descriptions of who can ‘do’ engineering were paradoxical. Participants simultaneously maintained that ‘anyone’ could do engineering and that individuals must also possess certain characteristics to become engineers. …

  • Using Studio Culture to Foster Epistemic Change in an Engineering Senior Design Course

Open Access•Erica Walker, D Matthew Boyer et al.•ARTICLE•IEEE Transactions on Education•2019

Contribution: This paper furthers understanding of how to use studio culture to develop instruction that supports learners' epistemic development in the context of an engineering senior design course, with a focus on student development of epistemic frames. Background: Current capstone engineering design courses do not integrate the educational theories and practice of cognitive apprenticeship combined with studio culture. Combined, these can be …

  • IEEE Education Society Awards, 2018 Frontiers in Education Conference Awards, and Selected IEEE Awards

    Open Access•James J Sluss, Susan M Lord et al.•ARTICLE•IEEE Transactions on Education•2019

The IEEE Education Society, the IEEE Computer Society, and the American Society for Engineering Education Educational Research and Methods Division (ASEE-ERM) sponsored the 48th Frontiers in Education (FIE) Conference in San Jose, CA, USA, held October 3–6, 2018. Claudio R. Brito, President of the IEEE Education Society, and Stephen T. Frezza, Chair of the FIE Steering Committee, presented awards sponsored by the Education Society and the FIE Con…

  • Design Experiences, Engineering Identity, and Belongingness in Early Career Electrical and Computer Engineering Students

Open Access•Jacqueline Rohde, Lisa Musselman et al.•ARTICLE•IEEE Transactions on Education•2019

Contribution: This paper found that design experiences can foster engineering identity and belongingness for early career electrical and computer engineering students. Students had different interpretations of what it meant to be an engineer (identity) and their belongingness in engineering. This paper provides novel insights into how students may be developing identities and belongingness in engineering, both critical for student retention and s…

  • Gendered Interests in Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering

Open Access•Gilles Potvin, Catherine McGough et al.•ARTICLE•IEEE Transactions on Education•2018

Contribution: The current study finds that female-identified students report stronger associations between “helping others” and interest in bioengineering/biomedical engineering than non-females, while they report less interest in electrical and computer engineering overall, with similar associations to factors such as “inventing/designing things” than non-females. Background: While women have made gains in STEM, electrical and computer engineeri…

  • A global map of mangrove forest soil carbon at 30 m spatial resolution

Open Access•Jonathan Sanderman, Tomislav Hengl et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2018

With the growing recognition that effective action on climate change will require a combination of emissions reductions and carbon sequestration, protecting, enhancing and restoring natural carbon sinks have become political priorities. Mangrove forests are considered some of the most carbon-dense ecosystems in the world with most of the carbon stored in the soil. In order for mangrove forests to be included in climate mitigation efforts, knowled…

  • Engineering Women’s Attitudes and Goals in Choosing Disciplines with Above and Below Average Female Representation

    Open Access•Dina Verdín, Andrew Godwin et al.•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2018•Referencias: 18

Women’s participation in engineering remains well below that of men at all degree levels. However, despite the low enrollment of women in engineering as a whole, some engineering disciplines report above average female enrollment. We used multiple linear regression to examine the attitudes, beliefs, career outcome expectations, and career choice of first-year female engineering students enrolled in below average, average, and above average female…
