Policies slow biological invasions in Europe, but legacies still matter
Biosecurity from non-native insects in Belt and Road countries
The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), as a green development initiative, highlights the importance of regional cooperation among participating countries to address the possibility of non-native organisms. We created a database of 8655 non-native insect records from 3059 non-native insect species of 312 families to better understand invasion vulnerability. Results showed that Coleoptera, Hemiptera, and Hymenoptera dominated, comprising 72.54% of all…
Invading Ecological Networks
Until now, biological invasions have been conceptualised and studied mainly as a linear process: from introduction to establishment to spread. This volume charts a new course for the field, drawing on key developments in network ecology and complexity science. It defines an agenda for Invasion Science 2.0 by providing new framings and classification of research topics and by offering tentative solutions to vexing problems. In particular, it conce…
Air pollution perception in ten countries during the Covid-19 pandemic
As largely documented in the literature, the stark restrictions enforced worldwide in 2020 to curb the COVID-19 pandemic also curtailed the production of air pollutants to some extent. This study investigates the perception of the air pollution as assessed by individuals located in ten countries: Australia, Brazil, China, Ghana, India, Iran, Italy, Norway, South Africa and the USA. The perceptions towards air quality were evaluated by employing a…
Exponential Damping
Due to its excessive capacity for human-to-human transmission, the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has now been declared a global public health emergency. Here we propose a simple model based on exponential infectious growth, but with a time-varying, largely damping, transmission rate. This model provides an excellent fit to the existing data for 46 countries with 10,000+ cases by 16 May 2020, five continents and the entire world. Hence, the …
Driving factors of community‐level plant functional traits and species distributions in the desert‐wetland ecosystem of the Shule River Basin, China
Groundwater, as the limiting resource in arid ecosystems, can have profound effects on the functional structure and distribution of plant communities. However, studies are too few to unveil the impacts of groundwater depth on plant functional traits in such communities. We collected data on vegetation, topography and soil properties from 180 quadrats (60 trees/shrubs and 120 herbaceous) in the desert‐wetland ecosystem of Shule River Basin in Nort…
Recent deforestation drove the spike in Amazonian fires
Tropical forests are of global importance even though they only cover around 10% of the Earth's land surface. They store large amounts of carbon and host between one-half and two-thirds of the world's species (Lewis 2006). Small changes in the tropical moist forest—the most biodiverse biome within the tropical forests—may lead to global impacts on climate dynamics and warming, water cycles, and the loss of biodiversity. If the current rates of de…

Carrying Capacity of the Environment
Biocapacity supply and demand in Northwestern China
Integrating spatial analysis with the supply and demand of biocapacity is critical for the sustainable development of regional eco-economic systems. Previous studies have focused on the temporal analysis of biocapacity at broad geographical scales, but lacked the systematic spatial realization at fine scales. An improvement is proposed of this conventional methodology of the ecological footprint by incorporating land-use data derived from high-re…
Spatiotemporal analysis of ecological footprint and biological capacity of Gansu, China 1991–2015
Ecological footprint methodology, as an excellent educational tool applicable to global issues, is essential for quantifying humanity's consumption of natural capital, for overall assessments of human impact on earth as well as for planning for a sustainable future. At present, quantitative studies on the development trends of ecological footprint (EF) time series and biological capacity (BC) time series in a given region are still rare. In this …
