  • Ancient Maya settlement abandonment and climate instability in Belize (700–1600 CE)

Open Access•Alec Mclellan, Sarah E Metcalfe et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2026

We evaluated the “drought-collapse” narrative in Maya archaeology by mapping settlement abandonment across 294 sites in Belize against high-resolution paleoclimate data. Although severe droughts occurred in Belize between 700 and 1600 CE, their impact on Maya settlement dynamics was uneven. Despite receiving more annual rainfall, spatial analyses (relative-risk surfaces and cluster analysis) show that western and southern regions were abandoned e…

  • A Tale of Maize, Palm, and Pine

    Open Access•Elizabeth A C Rushton, Bronwen S Whitney et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2020

The environmental impact of the ancient Maya, and subsequent ecological recovery following the Terminal Classic decline, have been the key foci of research into socio-ecological interactions in the Yucatán peninsula. These foci, however, belie the complex pattern of resource exploitation and agriculture associated with post-Classic Maya societies and European colonisation. We present a high-resolution, 1200-year record of pollen and charcoal data…

  • Seasonality of Holocene hydroclimate in the Eastern Mediterranean reconstructed using the oxygen isotope composition of carbonates and diatoms from Lake Nar, central Turkey

    Open Access•Jonathan R Dean, Matthew D Jones et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2017•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 20

A positive shift in the oxygen isotope composition ( δ 18 O) of lake carbonates in the Eastern Mediterranean from the early to late Holocene is usually interpreted as a change to drier (reduced precipitation and evaporation (P/E)) conditions. However, it has also been suggested that changes in the seasonality of precipitation could explain these trends. Here, Holocene records of δ 18 O from both carbonates and diatom silica, from Lake Nar in cent…

  • A record of Holocene summer-season palaeohydrological changes from the southern margin of Chihuahua Desert (Mexico) and possible forcings

    Open Access•Priyadarsi D Roy, Axel Rivero-Navarette et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2013•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 6

Proxy records of runoff, lake water salinity and aeolian activity, reconstructed by analyzing the concentrations of Ti, Ca and Zr/Ti in the sediments of palaeolake Las Cruces, provide information about millennial-scale summer season palaeohydrological changes at the southern margin of Chihuahua Desert over the last 8.4 cal. kyr BP. The data indicate generally higher-than-average runoff between c. 8.4 and 5 cal. kyr BP, correlative to the early Ho…

  • Holocene-aged human footprints from the Cuatrociénegas Basin, NE Mexico

    Open Access•Nicholas J Felstead, Silvia Gonzalez et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2013•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 3

  • Lake Sediments Record Sensitivity of Two Hydrologically Closed Upland Lakes in Mexico to Human Impact

    Sarah J Davies, E Metcalfe et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2005•Referencias: 20

We provide evidence of rapid, recent environmental change in two lakes in the highlands of central Mexico. Multiple sediment cores were obtained from Lago de Zirahuén (Michoacán) and Laguna de Juanacatlán (Jalisco). Analysis of diatom assemblages, magnetic susceptibility, and metal concentrations was carried out, with the chronology provided by 210Pb dating, 14C dating, and tephrochronology. There is evidence of catchment disturbance during the c…

  • Holocene environmental change in the Zacapu Basin, Mexico

    Open Access•E Metcalfe, Sarah E Metcalfe•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1995•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 5

The Zacapu basin, Michoacán, Mexico, is one of a series of internally drained lake basins in the central highlands of Mexico. The basin has a history of occupation spanning at least 2000 years and before the arrival of the Spanish was a major centre for the Purépecha culture. Results are presented of diatom studies from four lacustrine sediment sequences which have Holocene radiocarbon dates: CEMCA Point 1, CEMCA Point 4, the Zacapu core and Zaca…

  • Reconstructing the climate of Mexico from historical records

    Open Access•Sarah L O’hara, Sarah L O'Hara et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1995•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 4

There is a growing number of studies that use historical sources to reconstruct recent environmental change. In Mexico there are abundant sources of information that can be used to determine variations in the climate over the historical period. In this paper we draw together information from a variety of primary and secondary historical sources to reconstruct fluctuations in the climate of central Mexico over the last 600 years. The Aztecs are be…
