Energy, material, and resource efficiency for industrial decarbonization
A Case Study on Community Treatment Center for Response to Covid-19 in Korea
In March, 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic in Korea, the first Community Treatment Center (CTC), which is a motel-type Alternate Care Site (ACS) for mild and asymptomatic patients, was opened. This is a case study of the first Community treatment center prepared to respond to COVID-19. One of the researchers worked as a medical doctor in one of the CTCs operated by the Korean government. The CTC's eight medical staff members were interviewed in…
Decarbonizing the chemical industry
Six bold steps towards net-zero industry
The rapid and deep decarbonization of global industry is key to reaching climate policy targets, yet it remains an incredibly difficult challenge. We propose six bold steps for accelerating progress on achieving net-zero industrial carbon emissions by mid-century with a focus on lessons learned and emerging analysis from both the Global North and Global South, the latter of which we consider as low or middle income countries primarily located in …

Critically assessing and projecting the frequency, severity, and cost of major energy accidents
Although energy systems are well known to lead to positive or negative externalities, one less explored attribute has been a rigorous historical and future looking assessment of energy accidents. In this study, we analyze an extensive dataset of 4,450 energy accidents from 1800 to 2018 across eleven energy systems. Our analysis reveals that these collective energy systems resulted in more than 278,000 human fatalities and approximately $421.3 bil…
Industrial decarbonization via hydrogen
The hidden costs of energy and mobility
What is the range and scope of externalities associated with electricity supply, energy efficiency, and transport? What research methods and techniques of valuation does the community use to monetize these externalities? What policy implications arise in terms of better governing energy and mobility systems? To answer these questions, this study offers a comprehensive and global research synthesis of externalities for energy and mobility. It synt…
