  • Excavation of a kerbed funerary monument at Stoneyfield, Raigmore, Inverness, Highland, 1972–3

    Derek D A Simpson, D F MacKreth et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Society of…•1997•Citada por: 5

Rescue excavation at Stoneyfield was undertaken on behalf of the then Ministry of Public Buildings and Works (Scotland) in 1972–3. The results suggest that this multi-period monument can be divided broadly into three major phases of construction. In Phase 1 a series of pits were dug in the early third millennium BC, one containing Grooved Ware and a second a cup-marked stone. In Phase 2 further pits were dug, again some with Grooved Ware. Two of …

  • The Excavation of Two Cairns and Associated Features at Carneddau, Carno, Powys, 1989–90

    Alex Gibson, Stephen Aldhouse-Green et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Journal•1993•Citada por: 5

The complete excavation of one and the partial excavation of a second bronze age structured cairn are described. The excavations provided important evidence for the construction sequence of the cairns and Welsh bronze age funerary practices. A series of radiocarbon dates was obtained for the collared urns associated with the cairns

  • Plas Gogerddan, Dyfed

    Kenneth Murphy, H N Savory et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Journal•1992•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 4

At Plas Gogerddan, evidence was discovered for human presence from the middle of the fourth millennium B.C. up to the present day. Numerous pits and post-holes were excavated around a standing stone; one of these pits was dated to the tenth-fifteenth centuries B. c. To the west of the standing stone, three ring-ditches were constructed and used in the first millennium B.C.; in association with these ring-ditches were three iron age crouched buria…

  • Rumney Castle, a Ringwork and Manorial Centre in South Glamorgan

    K W B Lightfoot, Kenneth Lightfoot et al.•ARTICLE•Medieval Archaeology•1992•Referencias: 5

RUMNEY CASTLE, a small ringwork historically part of the marcher lordship of Gwynllŵg, was situated above a steep natural scarp overlooking the R. Rhymney. First mentioned in A.D. 1184–85, the castle guarded the W. boundary of the lordship and the river crossing. The defences consisted of a ditch and clay rampart constructed around three sides of the site. Initially incorporated into the defences along the fourth side was a large timber building …

  • Prehistoric and Early Medieval Cemeteries at Tandderwen, near Denbigh, Clwyd

    K S Brassil, W G Owen et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Journal•1991•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 8

A cropmark complex of ring-ditches and square-plan ditches in the Vale of Clwyd, North Wales has been partially excavated. Mesolithic activity is represented predominantly by lithic waste in local cherts. A small bronze age cemetery, dated to between about 1660–1400 b.c., comprises a large and small ring-ditch and a ‘flat cemetery’ associated with Beaker inhumation burials, and by cremation burials, of which some were found with Food Vessel Urns.…

  • Excavations at Stackpole Warren, Dyfed

    Open Access•D G Benson, J G Evans et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•1990•Citada por: 13•Referencias: 16

Excavations of sites spanning the Beaker to early Roman periods at Stackpole Warren, Dyfed, are described. The sites are in an area of blown sand which enhanced their preservation and led to the separation of several horizons. The earliest is a buried soil beneath the blown sand which contained Mesolithic to Bronze Age artefacts. At site A, there was a roundhouse associated with Early Bronze Age pottery and dated to 1620±70 and 1400±70 BC uncal.,…

  • Eight Ring-ditches at Four Crosses, Llandysilio, Powys, 1981–85

Walt Warrilow, Glyn Owen et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•1986•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 10

Eight ring-ditches and several stretches of pit alignment have been excavated between 1981 and 1985, as part of the investigation of an extensive cropmark complex on a gravel terrace in the Upper Severn valley at Four Crosses, northern Powys. Excavation of the ring-ditches, which form part of a more scattered barrow cemetery, has revealed a long and complex pattern of development of barrow types and burial forms in the period between the Middle N…

  • The Excavation of Two Round Barrows at Trelystan, Powys

    Open Access•William Britnell, T C Darvill et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•1982•Citada por: 18•Referencias: 15

The excavation of two adjacent round barrows at Trelystan, Long Mountain, Powys, in 1979, has revealed a complex sequence of Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Age funerary structures and traces of Late Neolithic settlement. The earliest structure was a large pit grave, dated to about 2400 bc, which was superseded at about 2200 bc by a settlement represented by stake-walled buildings associated with Grooved Ware. Following this some activity took pl…
