  • The significance of the gateways on the outskirts of the Odra (Oder) river drainage basin for early medieval communication routes

Andrzej Piotrowski, Paweł Sydor et al.•ARTICLE•Praehistorische Zeitschrift•2025

Gateways on waterways play a special role, providing links to neighbouring river drainage basins and their communities. In addition to inter-regional as well as local communication, water links were also of strategic and economic importance. The main objective of this study is to characterise the most important gateways connecting the Odra (Oder) drainage basin area with neighbouring areas in terms of their potential for communication and transpo…

  • Coastal flooding in Kołobrzeg (Kolberg) area, southern Baltic Sea, in the light of historical and geological data

    Open Access•Andrzej Piotrowski, Fritz Brose et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2024•Referencias: 5

The Baltic Sea is not a typical tsunami area, but there are reports of coastal flooding, with its traces preserved in deposits from Germany, Finland and Sweden, and more recently from Poland. In this study an attempt was made to verify historical and legendary accounts of the ‘Sea Bear’ (‘der Seebär’) phenomenon. In the descriptions of folk accounts, the phenomenon has the features such as suddenness, speed, short duration, independence from the …

  • Driving forces and determinants of barrier coast evolution in the Holocene observed on the southern coast of the Baltic Sea

    Open Access•Paweł Sydor, Szymon Uścinowicz•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2023•Referencias: 17

Coastal barriers account for approximately one-eighth of the world’s coastline. Barriers are the most common landform type in the southern part of the Baltic Sea area. Despite the long history of research, the issue of barrier coast evolution remains unresolved. The topic of this research is to determine the conditions under which the barrier coast evolved in the Holocene and to explain the local, different histories of its development. A 35 km l…

  • The marketplace landscape in Santok in the 8 th –9 th century, NW Poland

    Kinga Zamelska-Monczak, Andrzej Piotrowski et al.•ARTICLE•Praehistorische Zeitschrift•2023

The results of archaeological research carried out on the early medieval stronghold in Santok prove that from the 2 nd half of the 8 th century it functioned in the contact zone between Baltic trade centres and inland, as one of the points in the network of goods exchange. We present the centre in a broader context, not only from the perspective of discovered artefacts but from the natural and ideological elements of the landscape of this place c…

  • Holocene relative sea-level changes in the eastern part of Pomeranian Bay and the Szczecin Lagoon, Southern Baltic Sea

    Open Access•Paweł Sydor, Szymon Uścinowicz•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2022•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 10

Sea-level changes of the Baltic Sea have been in the focus since the beginning of Baltic history studies. The main goal of the study is to reconstruct Holocene sea-level changes in the eastern part of Pomeranian Bay and the Szczecin Lagoon. For this purpose, 171 radiocarbon dates were used for the eastern part of Pomeranian Bay and 131 radiocarbon dates for the Szczecin Lagoon. The data allow reconstructing sea-level changes in the last 8500 year…

  • Geoarchaeological studies in the early medieval Santok stronghold (north‐western Poland)

    Open Access•Kinga Zamelska-Monczak, Andrzej Piotrowski et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2021•Referencias: 2

Santok played a strategic socio‐political role in the Early Middle Ages. It is situated at the confluence of two large rivers (Warta and Noteć) on the boundary of historical regions in north‐western Poland. The stronghold in Santok is located on a sandy elevated floodplain with frequent floods in the immediate vicinity of the morainic plateau. The geological and engineering conditions within the stronghold were complex, making it a very difficult…

  • Climate and sea level variability on a centennial time scale over the last 1500 years as inferred from the Coastal Peatland of Puck Lagoon (southern Baltic Sea)

    Open Access•Szymon Uścinowicz, Małgorzata Witak et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2020•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 4

The climate variability and related sea-level changes during the Holocene are still under discussion, especially in a regional context. Very little information comes from the southern and south-eastern Baltic coast. The aim of the paper is to gain insight on the history of regional environmental changes, particularly sea-level and storminess, and their driving forces. The investigations were located on a peatland on the coast of Puck Lagoon (Gulf…
