  • Typology and chronology in the later prehistoric pottery assemblages of the Western Isles

    Patrick G Topping•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Society of…•1988

A re-examination of the pottery from major sites in the Western Isles, taking into account the problems of calibration of the 14C dates and the dating of the small finds, suggests that typologies based on form and decoration are over-simplistic. (Au)

  • A Test of the Use of Neutron Activation Analysis for Clay Source Characterization

    Open Access•Patrick G Topping, A B MACKENZIE•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•1988•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 4

A description is provided of the analytical and statistical methods used in a study of the later prehistoric pottery of the Western Isles of Scotland. The accuracy and precision of the methods used are discussed and results are presented for the analysis of a set of clay samples from known locations. The study indicates that the methods employed provide an adequate means of characterizing clays from the various sources used. In addition the use o…

Several hundred of the lost pottery sherds have now been recovered and are describe…

  • Neutron Activation Analysis of Later Prehistoric Pottery from the Western Isles of Scotland

    Patrick G Topping•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•1986•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 4

The pottery of the later prehistoric period in the Western Isles of Scotland displays a variety of decorative styles and forms not found elsewhere on the Scottish mainland. Traditional approaches have attempted to define stylistic sequences or to identify wares to which chronological and cultural labels may be attached. In this study neutron activation analysis was utilized to examine if the distinctions which had been drawn were mirrored by chem…
