  • HIV programme sustainability in Southern and Eastern Africa and the changing role of external assistance for health

    Open Access•Abigail H Neel, Daniela C Rodríguez et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•2024

High human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)–prevalence countries in Southern and Eastern Africa continue to receive substantial external assistance (EA) for HIV programming, yet countries are at risk of transitioning out of HIV aid without achieving epidemic control. We sought to address two questions: (1) to what extent has HIV EA in the region been programmed and delivered in a way that supports long-term sustainability and (2) how should developme…

Open Access•Aparna Kollipara, Devanand Moonasar et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2023

South Africa's effort to eliminate malaria is significantly challenged by a large number of imported malaria cases, especially from neighbouring Mozambique. The country has a funding gap to achieve its malaria elimination goals (prior to 2019) and is ineligible to receive a national allocation from the Global Fund. The findings of an IC were utilised to successfully mobilise resources for malaria elimination in South Africa in 2018. A five-step r…

  • The investment case for hepatitis B and C in South Africa

Open Access•Robert Hecht, Lindsey Hiebert et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•2018•Referencias: 28

Even though WHO has approved global goals for hepatitis elimination, most countries have yet to establish programs for hepatitis B and C, which account for 320 million infections and over a million deaths annually. One reason for this slow response is the paucity of robust, compelling analyses showing that national HBV/HCV programs could have a significant impact on these epidemics and save lives in a cost-effective, affordable manner. In this co…

  • Population–level effectiveness of PMTCT Option A on early mother–to–child (MTCT) transmission of HIV in South Africa

Open Access•Ameena Ebrahim Goga, Thu-Ha Dinh et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2016

BACKGROUND: Eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV (EMTCT), defined as ≤50 infant HIV infections per 100 000 live births, is a global priority. Since 2011 policies to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) shifted from maternal antiretroviral (ARV) treatment or prophylaxis contingent on CD4 cell count to lifelong maternal ARV treatment (cART). We sought to measure progress with early (4-8 weeks postpartum) MTCT prevention an…

Open Access•Bernhard Schwartländer, John Stover et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2011

  • Equitable Distribution of Pepfar-Supported HIV/Aids Services in South Africa

    E Larson, Heidi O'Bra et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2011•Referencias: 1

This letter to the editor describes South Africa’s lack of proper health infrastructure which has led to inequalities in access to healthcare. This primarily affects the population’s access to HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis treatments. The South African government and the U.S.’s PEPFAR program have been working to reverse this trend. Recent data indicates that there is an association between the burden of HIV/AIDS and the people tested for HIV/AIDS as…

  • The Use of the Geographical Information System (GIS) to Determine Potential Access and Allocation of Public Mental Health Resources in KwaZulu-Natal

Open Access•Arvin Bhana, Yogan Pillay et al.•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•1998•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 6

Geographical Information System (GIS) was used to map public mental health facilities in KwaZulu-Natal. Gaps in policy and planning around mental health are identified and these are traced historically up to the current period. Given that under the previous political dispensation various departments of health were responsible for health and mental health services, where limited - if any - joint planning occurred, there is a need to locate all fac…

    Open Access•Yogan Pillay, Y G Pillay et al.•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•1996•Citada por: 12•Referencias: 3

The current political changes in South Africa and the realization that there is a need to transform many institutions have resulted in strident calls for changes to mental health policies. However, it is also recognized that these changes must be coherent, and should enjoy the support of all interested constituencies. The authors surveyed members of the mental health professions, namely, Clinical and Counselling Psychologists to elicit their opiń…

  • Personal Constructs of Fluency

Open Access•Saloshni Naidoo, Yogan Pillay et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1990

The personal construct systems relating to fluency of a group of five stutterers and a group of five nonstutterers were examined using the repertory grid technique. The results support findings that stereotypical notions about stuttering were characteristic of both stutterers and nonstutterers and did not support Fransella's 1972 assumption that constructs relating to fluency differ in the communication subsystems of stutterers and nonstutterers
