  • Reach of Community-Selected Strategies to Reduce Opioid-Related Overdose Deaths in the Healing Communities Study

    Open Access•Megan E Hall, LaShawn M Glasgow et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2026

INTRODUCTION: Despite recent declines, the U.S. opioid overdose crisis persists. The HEALing Communities Study (HCS) aimed to reduce opioid overdose deaths through community-level adoption of evidence-based practices (EBPs), including overdose education and naloxone distribution (OEND) and medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD). This paper describes the reach of OEND and MOUD strategies implemented by the 33 HCS wait-list control communities.…

  • Access to mental health and psychosocial support among migrants in transit in Colombia

Open Access•M Claire Greene, Diany Castellar et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Mental Health•2026

Extended periods of transit have become a defining feature of migration, driven by restrictive externalization policies globally and under-resourced health and social protection systems in transit countries. Migrants in transit-individuals actively migrating between their place of origin and intended destination-are disproportionately exposed to violence, exploitation, and other adversities that increase their risk for mental health problems. Mig…

  • System dynamics modeling in support of community-based decision-making to reduce opioid overdose fatalities

Open Access•Turner Canty, Matthew R Lootens et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Both New York State (NYS) and the United States have experienced heightened levels of opioid overdose death and prevalence of opioid use in recent decades. While evidence-based practices (EBPs) to address opioid use and prevent overdose fatalities exist, their reach in many communities remains limited. Persistent systems-level barriers must be overcome to support and sustain effective EBP implementation. This paper describes the Systems Think Tan…

  • System dynamics modeling to inform implementation of evidence-based prevention of opioid overdose and fatality

    Open Access•Nasim S Sabounchi, Rachel L Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2025

  • Leveraging systems science and design thinking to advance implementation science

    Open Access•Terry T-K Huang, Emily A Callahan et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Many public health challenges are characterized by complexity that reflects the dynamic systems in which they occur. Such systems involve multiple interdependent factors, actors, and sectors that influence health, and are a primary driver of challenges of insufficient implementation, sustainment, and scale of evidence-based public health interventions. Implementation science frameworks have been developed to help embed evidence-based intervention…

  • The Influence of Housing Status and Food Insecurity on a Behavioral HIV/STI Prevention Intervention for Black Women under Community Supervision in New York City

Open Access•Nishita Dsouza, Louisa Gilbert et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2024

  • Hepatitis C virus risk among young people who inject drugs

    Open Access•Pedro Mateu-Gelabert, Pedro Mateu‐gelabert et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

Background Injection drug use (IDU) is the leading risk factor for hepatitis C virus (HCV) transmission in the U.S. While the general risk factors for HCV transmission are known, there is limited work on how these factors interact and impact young people who inject drugs (YPWID). Methods Project data were drawn from a study of 539 New York City (NYC) residents ages 18-29 who were recruited via Respondent-Driven Sampling and, reported past-month n…

  • Trends and Insights from Transportation Congestion Pricing Policy Research

Open Access•Bhavna Singichetti, Adam Dodd et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Toll-based congestion pricing (CP) policies are increasingly implemented globally for alleviating road traffic congestion. Several interconnected factors affecting or induced by CP implementation include air quality/emissions, travel time, and road user safety. We sought to examine and characterize research output and patterns across several domains (e.g., health, policy acceptability) surrounding toll-based CP policies, in order to identify wher…

  • Qualitative System Dynamics Modeling to Support Community Planning in Opioid Overdose Prevention

    Open Access•Nasim S Sabounchi, David W Lounsbury et al.•ARTICLE•Research on Social Work Practice•2022•Referencias: 2

SD modeling is a novel approach to helping community stakeholders to see the inter-connectedness of actors, factors and sectors and the need for multiple mutually reinforcing strategies to avert opioid overdose and fatality. Social workers could play a key role in linking actions across sectors in such a complex system

  • Intersectional Stigma and Prevention Among Gay, Bisexual, and Same Gender–Loving Men in New York City, 2020

    Priscila Lutete, D W Matthews et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2022•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 55

Objectives. To create causal loop diagrams that characterize intersectional stigma experiences among Black, gay, bisexual, same gender–loving, and other men who have sex with men and to identify intervention targets to reduce stigma and increase testing and prevention access. Methods. Between January and July 2020, we conducted focus groups and in-depth interviews with 80 expert informants in New York City, which were transcribed, coded, and anal…

  • A Novel System Dynamics Model of Female Obesity and Fertility

Nasim S Sabounchi, Peter S Hovmand et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2014•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 46

Objectives. Our objective was to create a system dynamics model specific to weight gain and obesity in women of reproductive age that could inform future health policies and have the potential for use in preconception interventions targeting obese women. Methods. We used our system dynamics model of obesity in women to test various strategies for family building, including ovulation induction versus weight loss to improve ovulation. Outcomes incl…
