Infusing intellectual and Developmental disability training into Medical School curriculum
A brief (4 hours total) intervention was associated with modest but significant improved knowledge and attitudes towards PWIDDs. Replication and sustainability of this and other NICHE interventions are needed to fill gaps in PWIDDs' health care
Special Education Disparities Are Social Determinants of Health
Because social determinants of health often lie beyond the medical domain, interdisciplinary collaborations are needed to remediate them
National Parent Survey 2017
Sociopolitical events impact population health; parents' perspective of such events crosses demographics, geography, and generations. We elicited changes in U.S. parents' hopes and worries for their children 1 year after the 2016 election via an online survey of school climate, discrimination against child, family health care and security, and macrolevel/future concerns (e.g., environment, postsecondary options). Among n = 1189 respondents, natio…
Reducing pediatric caries and obesity risk in South Asian immigrants
ClinicalTrials.gov NCT03077425
Adverse childhood experiences, poverty, and parenting stress.
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with physical and mental health problems in adulthood, as well as unresolved or discordant states of mind regarding attachments that have implications for problematic parenting. Currently, there are no studies on the association between ACEs and adults' subjective experiences of stress in the parenting role, where socioeconomic status (SES)−related poverty effects have been controlled for--the c…
Group Attachment-Based Intervention
This article outlines the main premises of an innovative trauma-informed intervention, group attachment-based intervention, specifically developed to target vulnerable families with infants and toddlers, living in one of the poorest urban counties in the nation. It also reports on the trauma-relevant characteristics of 60 families entering a clinical trial to study the effectiveness of Group Attachment-Based Intervention. Initial survey results r…

Bottle and sippy cup use is associated with diet and energy intake in toddlers
The second year of life incorporates a continued shift from a liquid- to solid-based diet. Little is known about the prevalence and dietary impact of bottle and sippy cup use. This paper describes associations between percent of energy consumed via drinking containers (bottles and sippy cups combined) and dietary outcomes, between 1 and 2 years of age. This observational study recruited n = 299 low-income, nutrition programme clients from the Bro…
Effect of Primary Care Intervention on Breastfeeding Duration and Intensity
Objectives. We determined the effectiveness of primary care–based, and pre- and postnatal interventions to increase breastfeeding. Methods. We conducted 2 trials at obstetrics and gynecology practices in the Bronx, New York, from 2008 to 2011. The Provider Approaches to Improved Rates of Infant Nutrition & Growth Study (PAIRINGS) had 2 arms: usual care versus pre- and postnatal visits with a lactation consultant (LC) and electronically prompted g…
Is overweight at 12 months associated with differences in eating behaviour or dietary intake among children selected for inappropriate bottle use
Bottle feeding beyond the recommended weaning age of 12 months is a risk factor for childhood obesity. This paper describes a sample of toddlers at high risk for obesity: prolonged bottle users from a low-income multi-ethnic community. We report here baseline mealtime and feeding behaviour, 24 h dietary recall and bottle intake data for Feeding Young Children Study (FYCS) participants, by overweight (≥85% weight-for-length) status. FYCS enrolled …
Perception of Weight Status and its Impact on Gestational Weight Gain in an Urban Population
Mother's reactions to a skills‐based breastfeeding promotion intervention
We interviewed women who participated in a breast-feeding promotion intervention study about whether and how participation affected their infant feeding choices, and if they would recommend such an intervention to others. The larger study, a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of an individualized, pre- and post-natal lactation consultant (LC) intervention, enrolled 382 low-income primarily Black and Hispanic women in New York City. Twenty-one wome…
Analysis of a Population-Based Pneumocystis carinii Pneumonia Index as an Outcome Measure of Access and Quality of Care for the Treatment of HIV Disease
Objectives. A population-based Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) Index was developed in New York City to identify geographic areas and subpopulations at increased risk for PCP. Methods. A zip code–level PCP Index was created from AIDS surveillance and hospital discharge records and defined as (number of PCP-related hospitalizations)/(number of persons living with AIDS). Results. In 1997, there were 2262 hospitalizations for PCP among 39 740 pe…

The Economic Impact of High-Technology Home Care
High-tech home care has not proven to be the panacea that it was\nexpected to be, at least partly because oversight has largely been absent. \nDespite claims to the contrary, the cost-effectiveness of home care is called\ninto question by high prices that often bear little relationship to costs. The\nabsence of research to determine when high-tech home care is clinically\nappropriate raises doubts about its widespread use. While there may, in fac…
