  • Adolescent smoking decline during California’s tobacco control programme

    John P Pierce, Martha M White et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2005

California's comprehensive programme may have kept new adolescent cohorts from experimenting with cigarettes. Low young adolescent experimentation rates at programme start appeared to carry through to young adulthood, resulting in a recent drop in young adult smoking prevalence in California not observed in the rest of the USA

  • How effective are tobacco industry bar and club marketing efforts in reaching young adults

    E A Gilpin, Victor White et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2005

About 20% of all young adults and about 30% of those at risk for future smoking (including current smokers) were exposed to tobacco advertising and promotions in bars and clubs. These California results may be conservative, but nonetheless indicate that the group potentially influenced is sizable

  • Changes in population attitudes about where smoking should not be allowed

    E A Gilpin, Lily Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2004

A strong, comprehensive tobacco control programme such as California's can influence population norms, including those of smokers, with respect to where smoking should not be allowed

  • The effects of household and workplace smoking restrictions on quitting behaviours

    A J Farkas, E A Gilpin et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•1999

Both workplace and household smoking restrictions were associated with higher rates of cessation attempts, lower rates of relapse in smokers who attempt to quit, and higher rates of light smoking among current daily smokers

  • Sharing the blame

    John P Pierce, E A Gilpin et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•1999

Our analysis provides a reasonable first estimate at sharing the blame for the long-term health consequences of smoking among the major brands that encourage adolescents to start smoking

  • Impact of the Amecian Stop Smoking Intervention Study on Cigarette consumption

    Marc W Manley, M Manley et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•1997

These interim results suggest that the ASSIST programme is associated with a substantial difference in tobacco consumption in a third of the United States, and that increased price from taxation may not be the only programme influence

  • Trends in adolescent smoking initiation in the United States

    E A Gilpin, John P Pierce•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•1997

Availability of cheaper cigarettes is not likely to be a cause of increased smoking initiation by adolescents. Although other influences cannot be ruled out, we suspect that the expanded tobacco marketing budget, with its increased emphasis on tactics that may be particularly pertinent to young people, affected adolescent initiation rates

  • How long will today's new adolescent smoker be addicted to cigarettes

    John P Pierce, E A Gilpin et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1996•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 7

This study estimated the expected smoking duration for young smokers who have started recently. Data from National Health Interview Surveys were combined to model the ages at which smoking prevalence will decline to various percentages of the peak smoking prevalence for each successive birth cohort. Smoking-cessation ages were then estimated for the males and females born from 1975 through 1979. The median cessation age for those in this cohort w…
