Community benefits of mass distribution of three types of dual-active-ingredient long-lasting insecticidal nets against malaria prevalence in Tanzania
Our study demonstrated that at a community usage of 40% or more of dual-AI LLINs non-users benefited from the presence of these nets. Noticeably, even when usage was ≤ 40% in the chlorfenapyr arm, non-users were better protected than non-users in the higher coverage pyrethroid-only arm. The greater difference in malaria risk observed between users and non-users indicates that LLINs play a crucial role in providing personal protection against mala…
Protective efficacy of holed and aging PBO-pyrethroid synergist-treated nets on malaria infection prevalence in north-western Tanzania
Two billion pyrethroid long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) have been distributed since 2004 for malaria prevention in Sub-Saharan Africa. Current malaria control strategies rely on an assumed effective 3-year lifespan for LLINs. PBO synergist LLINs are a newly recommended class of net but there is limited information on their life span and long-term protective efficacy in communities. To assess their operational survival, a cohort of 390 PBO L…
Evaluating the impact of screening plus eave tubes on malaria transmission compared to current best practice in central Côte d’Ivoire

Involvement of Mitanins (female health volunteers) in active malaria surveillance, determinants and challenges in tribal populated malaria endemic villages of Chhattisgarh, India
Mitanins can play an effective role in active fever surveillance for malaria besides performing other health related tasks at sub-village level after focused education on malaria related activities and proper supervision
The effectiveness of non-pyrethroid insecticide-treated durable wall lining to control malaria in rural Tanzania

Prices and mark-ups on antimalarials
The private for-profit sector is an important source of treatment for malaria. However, private patients face high prices for the recommended treatment for uncomplicated malaria, artemisinin combination therapies (ACTs), which makes them more likely to receive cheaper, less effective non-artemisinin therapies (nATs). This study seeks to better understand consumer antimalarial prices by documenting and exploring the pricing behaviour of retailers …
P2-403 Determinants of bed net usage in children under 5 and household bed net ownership in Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea
Background As part of the strategies the Bioko Island Malaria Control Project has implemented in recent years, around 80 000 insecticide treated nets (ITN) were delivered to the population in 2007. This study assesses the determinants of bed net usage and bed net ownership in children under 5. Methods Data were selected from 2008 and 2009 annual surveys of households who had at least one child under 5. Outcome variables were: sleeping under a net…
Sexual Violence and Reproductive Health Outcomes Among South African Female Youths
Objectives. We studied whether female youths from communities with higher sexual violence were at greater risk of negative reproductive health outcomes. Methods. We used data from a 2003 nationally representative household survey of youths aged 15–24 years in South Africa. The key independent variable was whether a woman had ever been threatened or forced to have sex. We aggregated this variable to the community level to determine, with control f…
Geographical disparities in core population coverage indicators for roll back malaria in Malawi
The striking geographical patterns, for example between predominantly urban and rural areas, may reflect spatial differences in provider compliance or coverage, and can partly be explained by socio-economic and cultural differences. The wide gap between high bed net coverage and low retreatment rates may reflect variation in perceptions about malaria, which may be addressed by implementing information, education and communication campaigns or int…
Young people's sexual health in South Africa
OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of HIV infection, HIV risk factors, and exposure to national HIV prevention programs, and to identify factors associated with HIV infection among South African youth, aged 15-24 years. DESIGN: A cross-sectional, nationally representative, household survey. METHODS: From March to August 2003 we conducted a national survey of HIV prevalence and sexual behavior among 11 904 15-24 year olds. Multivariable model…
Smoking behaviour can be predicted by neighbourhood deprivation measures
STUDY OBJECTIVE--To assess whether small area measures of socioeconomic deprivation predict variation in individual smoking behaviour. To examine the adequacy of an individual level statistical model for the analysis of data on groups of individuals who live in the same geographical area. DESIGN--Individual level and two level logistic regression analysis of data on individual smoking from a regional health survey, and neighbourhood deprivation s…
A standardisation approach to the control of socioeconomic confounding in small area studies of environment and health
OBJECTIVE--To assess how effectively a routine adjustment can be made for socio-economic confounding in small area studies of environment and health using indirect standardisation and small area deprivation indices, including analysis of the appropriate size of population unit on which to base the deprivation index and the importance of region and urban/rural status as axes of stratification. METHODS--Standardised morbidity ratios were calculated…
The Small Area Health Statistics Unit
STUDY OBJECTIVE--The Small Area Health Statistics Unit (SAHSU) was established at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in response to a recommendation of the enquiry into the increased incidence of childhood leukaemia near Sellafield, the nuclear reprocessing plant in West Cumbria. The aim of this paper was to describe the Unit's methods for the investigation of health around point sources of environmental pollution in the United Ki…
