  • Sexual-Orientation Differences in Positive Youth Development

    Robert W S Coulter, A L Herrick et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2016•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 30

Objectives. To examine sexual-orientation differences in positive youth development, and how bullying victimization mediated these differences in a sample of adolescents. Methods. In 2007 to 2008, positive youth development was measured in 1870 adolescents from US schools and after-school programs in 45 states by using the validated Five Cs model of competence, confidence, connection, character, and caring/compassion. Sexual-minority youths (6.8%…

  • Effects of syndemics on HIV viral load and medication adherence in the multicentre Aids cohort study

M Reuel Friedman, Ron Stall et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS•2015

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to determine associations between intertwining epidemics (syndemics) and HIV medication adherence and viral load levels among HIV-positive MSM and to test whether adherence mediates the relationship between syndemics and viral load. DESIGN: We analysed participant data collected between 2003 and 2009 from the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study, a prospective HIV/AIDS cohort study in four U.S. cities. METHODS:…

  • Raising Sexual Minority Youths’ Health Levels by Incorporating Resiliencies Into Health Promotion Efforts

Amy L Herrick, Amy Herrick et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2014•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 46

Myriad health inequities that sexual minority youths (SMYs) experience have been documented over the past several decades. Evidence demonstrates that these are not a result of intrinsic characteristics; rather, they result from high levels of adversity that SMYs experience. Despite the pervasive marginalization that SMYs face, there is also evidence of great resilience within this population. It seems likely that if a culture of marginalization p…

  • A Syndemic of Psychosocial Health Disparities and Associations With Risk for Attempting Suicide Among Young Sexual Minority Men

Brian Mustanski, Rebecca Andrews et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2014•Citada por: 19•Referencias: 48

Objectives. We examined a syndemic of psychosocial health issues among young men who have sex with men (MSM), with men and women (MSMW), and with women (MSW). We examined hypothesized drivers of syndemic production and effects on suicide attempts. Methods. Using a pooled data set of 2005 and 2007 Youth Risk Behavior Surveys from 11 jurisdictions, we used structural equation modeling to model a latent syndemic factor of depression symptoms, substa…

  • Adversity and Syndemic Production Among Men Participating in the Multicenter Aids Cohort Study

Amy L Herrick, Amy Herrick et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2013•Citada por: 16•Referencias: 25

Objectives. We tested a theory of syndemic production among men who have sex with men (MSM) using data from a large cohort study. Methods. Participants were 1551 men from the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study enrolled at 4 study sites: Baltimore, Maryland–Washington, DC; Chicago, Illinois; Los Angeles, California; and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Participants who attended semiannual visits from April 1, 2008, to March 31, 2009, completed an additional s…

  • Mental Health and HIV Risk in Men Who Have Sex With Men

Steven A Safren, Sari L Reisner et al.•ARTICLE•JAIDS Journal of Acquired Immune…•2010

Evidence-based HIV prevention interventions with men who have sex with men (MSM) in the United States have moderate effect sizes in reducing HIV sexual risk behavior. Mental health and psychosocial problems, which both disproportionately affect MSM populations and are implicated in HIV transmission risk behaviors, also likely interfere with the uptake of HIV behavioral interventions. Moreover, given that mental health and psychosocial problems su…

  • Health Risk Behaviors in an Urban Sample of Young Women Who Have Sex with Women

Amy L Herrick, Amy Herrick et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Lesbian Studies•2010•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 1

We examined the prevalence of sexual and substance use behaviors among a group of young women who have sex with women (WSW) aged 16 to 24. A convenience sample of 137 young WSW participants completed a confidential survey that included demographics, substance use, and sexual risk behaviors. Descriptive analyses were used to interpret the data. Comparisons were made between rates of risk behaviors in this sample and non-sexual minority youth in a …

  • Transgender Female Youth and Sex Work

Open Access•Erin C Wilson, Reebee Garofalo et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2009

This study examined the HIV risk behaviors and life experiences of 151 transgender female youth, ages 15-24, in Los Angeles and Chicago. Descriptive analyses and logistic regression modeling were used to identify life factors associated with ever having engaged in sex work. Sixty-seven percent of participants had ever engaged in sex work and 19% self-reported being HIV positive. Many factors were significantly associated with sex work for this sa…

  • Psychosocial health problems increase risk for HIV among urban young men who have sex with men

Brian Mustanski, Reebee Garofalo et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Behavioral Medicine•2007

BACKGROUND: Young men who have sex with men (YMSM) experience disparities in HIV rates and potentially in mental health, substance abuse, and exposure to violence. PURPOSE: We assessed the extent to which these psychosocial health problems had an additive effect on increasing HIV risk among YMSM. METHODS: An urban sample of 310 ethnically diverse YMSM reported on psychosocial health problems, sexual risk behaviors, and HIV status. A count of psyc…

Objectives. We examined the prevalence of Internet use for meeting sexual partners (Internet partners) and HIV risk behaviors associated with this use among young men who have sex with men (aged 16–24 years). Methods. A sample of 270 young men who have sex with men completed a computer-assisted survey. We used bivariate χ 2 analyses and hierarchical logistic regression to assess factors associated with Internet-facilitated sexual encounters. Resu…
