  • Understanding Russia’s war against Ukraine

    Open Access•Katri Pynnöniemi, Kati Parppei•ARTICLE•Journal of Strategic Studies•2024•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 22

We apply Anatol Rapoport’s typology of war to reconstruct how Russian research communities explain war against Ukraine. We argue that the initial three-dimensional framework can be divided into two explanatory models: military-political and eschatological-cataclysmic. The first model explains the war with reference to classical calculus about military threats and national interests. The second model interprets war as an act of creating a new worl…

  • Elämän ja elinkeinojen turvaamista rajaseudulla

    Open Access•Kati Parppei•ARTICLE•Historiallinen Aikakauskirja•2021

Niin kutsutun uuden sotahistorian ihmislähtöiset näkökulmat ovat vakiinnuttaneet paikkansa 1900-luvun sotien osalta, mutta yhtä lailla mikrohistoriallisilla työkaluilla voidaan operoida tutkittaessa vanhempien aikojen konflikteja. Suomen historian dosentti Jukka Kokkonen on ottanut urakan kontolleen ja tarkastellut jo pitkään Venäjän ja Ruotsin rajaseudun asukkaiden keinoja selviytyä toistuvista sodista ja niiden lieveilmiöistä varhaisella uudell…

  • “This Battle Started Long Before Our Days …” The Historical and Political Context of the Russo-Turkish War in Russian Popular Publications, 1877–78

    Open Access•Kati Parppei•ARTICLE•Nationalities Papers•2020

Popular publications produced in Russia on the events in the Balkans in 1877–78 offer a valuable opportunity to examine how the historical and political background of the Russo-Turkish War was conveyed to common readers, some of whom were potentially involved in the military action, or persuaded to support the cause by other means. The conceptions produced and distributed in these booklets were firmly based on pan-Slavistic ideas of Russians’ dut…

  • With the Tatar Barbarism of Batu

    Kati Parppei•ARTICLE•Russian History•2019

The invasion of Napoleon’s troops all the way to Moscow in 1812 has been seen as a turning point that accelerated the development of nationalistic thinking in Russia, already burgeoning at the turn of the century. Depictions of the invasion, produced from 1812–1814 indicate that perceptions of the collective past were in a state of both fermentation and formation, together with questions of Russia’s geopolitical position. The authors were leaning…

  • Notes of The Tale of the Rout of Mamai in the Context of the Collective Imagery Concerning the Battle of Kulikovo

    Kati Parppei•ARTICLE•Russian History•2015

Representations of military exploits are commonly used as “building material” in the post-Soviet reconstruction of collective identities. In the case of medieval battles, the scarcity of sources as well as temporal distance has allowed the production of relatively liberal representations, making them adjustable material for supporting contemporary ideas and power structures. The Battle of Kulikovo provides an illustrative case study. It took plac…

  • Pagans of Darkness, Cruel Lutherans

    Kati Parppei•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Journal of History•2010•Referencias: 5

Textual descriptions of ‘others’ tend to reflect perceptions, values and social identities of the group within which they are produced. Popular historical accounts concerning the past of the Russian Orthodox monastery of Valaam, located in the borderland area nowadays known as Russian Karelia, reveal two main lines in producing images of religious otherness from the 16th to the 19th century. The first one is based on the stereotypic medieval idea…
