The global development of community psychology as reflected in the American Journal of Community Psychology
This commentary presents a virtual special issue on the global growth of community psychology (CP), particularly, but not exclusively, as reflected in the American Journal of Community Psychology (AJCP) . CP exists in at least 50 countries all over the world, in many of those for over 25 years. Democracy and community psychology
Community psychology is a set of values, goals, and commitments. Those commitments include furthering well-being, empowerment, and human development. Stemming from these values and commitments, this paper promotes a reflection on democratic systems. Models of representative and participatory democracy are discussed. Resilience, Coloniality, and Sovereign Acts
Puerto Rico has been a U.S. colony since 1898. For the past decades, it has been mired in public debt, social problems, and ineffective and corrupt governance. In 2017, the island was hit by hurricanes which devastated our country. After the event, the term “resilience” became ubiquitous. Barriers and facilitators of HIV prevention with heterosexual Latino couples
Although HIV prevention interventions for women are efficacious, long-term behavior change maintenance within power-imbalanced heterosexual relationships has been difficult. Construction of Male Sexuality and Gender Roles in Puerto Rican Heterosexual College Students
In this study, we explored the contextual elements that influence the construction of male gender roles and sexuality among Puerto Rican heterosexual male college students. We conducted three focus groups with students of the University of Puerto Rico. Sessions were transcribed and content analyzed. Participants believed that gender roles are prescribed mainly through mass media and family. The mass media stresses men's capacity to have frequent …

The ethics of the powerful and the power of ethics
Toward a social-community psychology
This article presents a conceptual framework for social-community psychology that is the basis of a master's-level training program with the same name at the University of Puerto Rico. The framework responds to the crisis of confidence in social psychology and to the selection of a social change emphasis for community psychology. Its theoretical basis and its practical applications are explained.
Facilitating social support among community psychologists
Over the past few years, a network of regional coordinators has promoted a variety of community psychology activities in the United States and other countries, creating a base of social support for community psychologists in academic and field settings.
