Experienced Social Support and Cultural Humility for Faith-Based Cross-Cultural Workers During Covid-19
Employees of faith-based international organizations have been shown to be uniquely at risk for mental health symptoms, including depression and posttraumatic stress, while social support has been demonstrated to be an important protective factor. Cultural humility, which is understood as an openness to appreciate and learn from others, has also been shown to contribute to wellbeing for cross-cultural employees. Eighty-eight cross-cultural faith-…
Protecting National Security by Breaking the Law? Prerogative, Statute and the Powers of MI5
The Court of Appeal decision in Privacy International v Foreign Secretary (2021) found lawful the long‐secret policy governing the purported authorisation and commission of criminal offences as part of the work of MI5 and its informants. The Court found MI5 had a public law power to engage in such criminality, historically under the royal prerogative and more latterly as an implied power under the Security Service Act 1989. The authors argue that…
The End of Innocence
This case note explores the issue of open justice considered by Khuja (formerly PNM) v Times Newspapers Limited in the Supreme Court and argues that the current law is confused and incoherent. Far from settling the debate, it is suggested that the decision further undermines some of the key assumptions underpinning the current approach, especially in the light of the compelling and humane minority judgment. This leaves the area ripe for reconside…
Restoring Confidence
This article considers both the Fixed‐term Parliaments Act 2011 (FTPA) and the political constitution, to place the former in its political and constitutional context. It begins by setting out the background to the FTPA – which was a part of a Coalition agreement – and considers difficulties with the most commonly‐made arguments in favour of fixed‐term parliaments. The second part of the article considers the impact and potential practical legal …
Head injury in asylum seekers and refugees referred with psychological trauma
The emotional and cognitive consequences of HI in ASR may increase the vulnerability of this disadvantaged group, and can be associated with neurobehavioural problems affecting daily life and may compromise asylum outcomes. Routine screening for HI in ASR is needed, as are links to neuropsychology and brain injury services for advice, assessment and intervention
Black Spiders Weaving Webs
In R (Evans) v Attorney General , the Supreme Court quashed the Attorney General's statutory veto of the Upper Tribunal's original determination made under freedom of information legislation. The Upper Tribunal had held that so‐called ‘advocacy’ memos should be published after a full hearing on the merits. The Supreme Court split five to two, with the lead judgment of Lord Neuberger using constitutional rather than administrative language and foc…
Casting Aside Clanking Medieval Chains
This article confronts the controversies surrounding Article 50 by analysing the relationship between statute and prerogative in the UK. The piece focuses on domestic constitutional issues and suggests a new way of classifying the relationship between statute and prerogative into two types falling under ‘the abeyance principle’ or ‘the frustration principle’. The abeyance principle means that where statute and prerogative overlap, the prerogative…
Assessing Personality and Psychopathology With Interviews
This chapter discusses contemporary issues in assessing psychopathology and personality with interviews. We discuss types of interviews, how clients and clinicians approach an interview, and structured versus unstructured interviews. The structure of the interview is presented along with continuing concerns with official diagnostic systems. Issues that complicate the assessment process for personality disorders are discussed, including the base r…

Validity of Projective Drawing Indices of Male Homosexuality
We investigated the hypothesis that certain signs in the Draw-A-Person projective technique reflect male homosexuality. Human figure drawings from gay and 88 heterosexual men, with no clinical psychological symptoms, were submitted to trained raters who were blind to the purpose of this research. The raters independently judged whether 21 signs, previously referenced in the literature as suggestive of male homosexuality, were present in the figur…
Figure-Drawing Indices of Psychological Accessibility
We investigated the hypotheses that windows, doors, pathways, and size of the house in the House drawing of the House-Tree-Person projective drawing technique reflect psychological and social accessibility by correlating these variables with the Social Introversion scale of the MMPI-2. Subjects were 153 nonclinical, community adults, and 146 clinical patients currently receiving mental health services. While there were strong correlations among t…

Stability of the MCMI—III in a Substance-Abusing Inpatient Sample
The stability of the MCMI-III personality disorder and clinical syndrome scales was assessed in a substance-abusing inpatient sample of 35 African-American men over an average test-retest interval of 6 mo. Estimates were higher for the personality pattern scales than for the clinical syndrome scales. The Dependent personality pattern scale (.83) and the Narcissistic personality pattern scale (.80) were reliable after about six months, whereas Dru…

Picturing African‐Americans
In recent years, advertisements depicting stereotypes of African‐Americans have given way to advertising images that show African‐Americans as middle‐ and upper class consumers. This articles uses photo‐elicitation to study the meaning readers attach to advertising images of African‐American success. The results provide insight into how advertisements pull readers into a web of ideological meanings. The results also show how other social structur…
Christianity and Empire
INTRODUCTION\nHistorically the association of Christianity and empire has most often been a phenomenon that relates to either a Christendom model of church and state relationships or what might be best characterized as the “colonial” experience of European Christians in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. For example, Luis Rivera Pagan’s work A Violent Evangelism: The Political and Religious Conquest of the Americas develops the idea that the conque…
MCMI-II Profiles and Typologies for Patients Seen in Marital Therapy
The Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-II profiles of 145 patients in marital therapy, seen in a private-practice outpatient setting, were subjected to a hierarchical cluster analysis. Four distinct clusters were found (MCMI-II Codetypes 58B4, 8A6B8B5, 3217, and 37). Each of these clusters suggested different therapeutic goals. There were some scale differences by gender, with women tending to score higher on the Dependent Scale. We argue that …
Psychological Screening of Impotence with Finney's MMPI-Derived Impotence Scale
Three groups of patients in treatment were assessed for impotence, using MMPI-derived Impotence Scale. Group I were 46 patients who had been screened and scheduled for a penile prosthesis when the impotence resulted from known organic causes (biogenic). Group II were 198 patients in a sexual dysfunction clinic, for whom biogenic causes had been ruled out (psychogenic). Group III were 51 substance abusers in drug rehabilitation. While scores on th…
Contributions to Psychohistory
This paper is a review of major published works from psychoanalysts, psychiatrists, psychologists, academic scholars, and experts who have presented an "analysis" of the personality of Ernest Hemingway. Points of agreement and contrasting points of contention are discussed
PF Profiles and Typologies for Patients Seen in Marital Therapy
The purpose of this study was to examine and describe the personality characteristics of 145 patients seen in outpatient marital therapy in private practice. Cluster analysis of the entire sample resulted in five separate typologies which were statistically significant and clinically meaningful and which suggested different goals for counseling. Patients seeking marital therapy were significantly more tense, anxious, worrisome, suspicious, bold, …
Relationship between MCMI-II Scales and Normal Personality Traits
We correlated MCMI-II and 16 PF profiles of 145 couples in outpatient marital therapy and noted significant associations between these tests that were consistently and logically related to constructs which underlie the meaning of the MCMI-II scales. This provided good concurrent validity for both the Personality and Clinical Scales of the MCMI-II. These results add credence to research designed to study Millon's basic styles in normal populations

Relationship between Severity of Illness and Overinclusive Thinking in Schizophrenia
40 chronic schizophrenics were tested on 3 measures of overinclusive thinking, i.e., Epstein's test, proverbs and the Object Sorting Test, and then were rated for severity of illness with the Psychotic Reaction Profile. The results showed that severity of illness can be a significant source of variance in assessing schizophrenic thought disorder. Overinclusive thinking is not merely a trait evinced by schizophrenics irregardless of subject variab…
Significant Intercorrelations among Measures of Overinclusive Thinking
The purpose of this study was to replicate the results of Watson (1967), who reported low, non-significant intercorrelations between some prevalent measures of overinclusive thinking. Three measures of overinclusive thinking (Epstein's test, proverb word counts, and object sorting scores) were administered to 40 schizophrenics and 40 psychiatric attendants. Since groups were equivalent in age, IQ, education, and sex, they were combined for analys…
Blood Pressures and Electrocardiographic Findings in the South Australian Aborigines
Blood pressures and electrocardiographic findings in the South Australian Aborigines. F. M. Edwards, P. H. Wise, D. W. Thomas, J. B. Murchland and R. J. Craig Blood pressure measurements were recorded in 522 adults and 141 10–19 year‐old full and part blood Aborigines in five communities. The means for systolic and diastolic blood pressures at 40 years were close to those reported for Europeans, although below this age, values tended to be lower,…
Changes in Functional Ego States following Treatment for Drug Abuse
The Adjective Checklist (ACL), scored for functional ego states, was administered to 68 heroin addicts before and after inpatient, short-term, hospital-based treatment for drug abuse. The initial configuration and patterning of needs corresponded to the Adapted Child ego state, characterized by high needs for succorance, abasement, heterosexuality, nurturance, exhibition, and change. Following an average of 18 days of treatment, the subjects incr…
