  • Genius and Mastery in Military Innovation

    Nina Kollars, Nina A Kollars•ARTICLE•Survival•2017•Citada por: 2

When it comes to creating new battlefield concepts and capabilities, buying cutting-edge machines is not enough

  • Learning to Fight and Fighting to Learn

    Nina A Kollars, Richard R Muller et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Strategic Studies•2016•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 17

A military cannot hope to improve in wartime if it cannot learn. Ideally, in wartime, formal learning ceases and the application of knowledge begins. But this is optimistic. In 1942, USAAF Eighth Air Force assumed it had the means necessary for victory. In reality, its technique and technology were only potentially – rather than actually – effective. What remained was to create the practice of daylight bombing – to learn. This article (1) recover…

  • Bootstrapping and Portability in Simulation Design

    Nina Kollars, Nina A Kollars et al.•ARTICLE•International Studies Perspectives•2015•Citada por: 13•Referencias: 7

Despite the existence of a large literature on the use and effectiveness of simulations as part of the active learning pedagogical toolbox, simulations have yet to achieve wide adoption rates among college instructors. One of the principal constraints is time: traditionally, most simulations require extensive time for the faculty to design, prepare, and use in the classroom setting. This article examines two design features of simulations aimed a…

  • War’s Horizon

    Nina A Kollars•ARTICLE•Journal of Strategic Studies•2015•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 16

Wartime adaptation is a process of adjustment from the war you planned for to the one you have. This process of adjustment is done, in part, by the practitioners of war in the theater of conflict–soldier-led adaptation. Drawing upon two case studies of gun truck development in Iraq and Vietnam I argue that soldiers created networks in order to adapt to battlefield challenges and that the pattern of those networks carries implications for the like…

  • Organising Adaptation in War

    Nina Kollars, Nina A Kollars•ARTICLE•Survival•2015•Citada por: 3

In an institution characterised by hierarchy and organisational rigidity, how do military personnel accelerate adaptation to increase their chances of survival and mission success

  • Military Innovation's Dialectic

    Nina Kollars, Nina A Kollars•ARTICLE•Security Studies•2014•Citada por: 9

In times of war, the routes to innovation are often brutally radical instead of starry-eyed and fantastical. Still, compared with all the hype and hoopla about revolutionary technologies, little scholarly ink has been spilled over these "low-end" military innovations. "Field mods," as they are often called, are not the sexy computerized drones and robotic sensations we associate with military innovation. This article recovers the process by which…

  • Apsa Teaching and Learning Conference Track Summaries

    Open Access•Nina Kollars, Nina A Kollars et al.•ARTICLE•PS Political Science & Politics•2011

In a weekend of pedagogical fury, members of the Simulations and Role Play II track queried their peers to refine their ideas, presented data on the effectiveness of simulations as pedagogical tools, and shared methods of using simulations in the classroom. Paper presentations and discussions examined simulations from a variety of paradigmatic perspectives, including the use of simulations as summative assessment instruments, the role of competit…
